Yokohama Dog Names

If you want your dog’s name to have a proper backstory, not just that they have a Yokohama dog name, then why not look at dogs in pop culture that relate to Yokohama? Take the name Poppy, for example. Poppy is the name of two dogs in pop culture but also refers to a movie set in Yokohama.

The connection comes from the film From up on Poppy Hill, a 2011 animated drama film put together by Studio Ghibli and directed by Goro Miyazaki. The film gets its origins from the district of Yamate in Yokohama and follows a series of Japanese comic books of the same name.

From up on Poppy Hill is about Umi Matsuzaki, a high school student living in the Coquelicot Manor boarding house. She joins the school’s newspaper club and sets about trying to stop the demolition of the school’s clubhouse.

If you were to call your dog Poppy, you could also link it with Nathalie Lake’s Chihuahua in the 1996 film Mars Attacks! The movie stars Jack Nicholson, and Tim Burton is the director. It follows Martians who surround the planet, and no one is quite sure if they are friendly or not. It turns out that they are not!

Poppy is the director, Tim Burton’s dog, and she appears in the arms of Nathalie Lake, a chat show host. The footage streams live on the TV screens of everyday people in the film, showing the Martians speaking through a translation machine, with the Ambassador of Mars letting everyone know that they come in peace.

A hippie then releases a dove as a peace symbol, but the Ambassador shoots it before Martians begin slaughtering everyone there. Those killed included the General, news reporters, and the chat show host Nathalie – along with Poppy.

Poppy also appears as a Chihuahua (albeit, a different one) in the 2008 film Easy Virtue. Easy Virtue stars Jessica Biel and Colin Firth and gets its inspiration from the play of the same name by Noel Coward. Alfred Hitchcock also made it into a silent film.

It’s a romantic social comedy that follows a glamorous widow who marries a young Englishman at the Monaco Grand Prix. His mother does not like the widow, but his father appears to be in quite good spirits. Family tension escalates, and the movie takes some unusual twists and turns. Poppy Whittaker is the Englishman’s family dog, played by the real-life Chihuahua called Fizz.
