Lou's life is turned upside down when a Doberman Pinscher abruptly spirits all of Lou's siblings away and replaces them with other Dobies. Due to his failed escape attempt, Lou gets separated from his litter. It's around this time that the main human characters of the story - the Brody Family - visit the farm to adopt a dog.

Professor Charles Brody and his wife Carolyn immediately fall in love with Lou. Their young son Scotty, however, disapproves of the Beagle; in fact, he initially calls Lou a "loser" during their first meeting. Carolyn derives the name Lou from Scotty's insult and the family takes the Beagle home. Later that night, Lou has his first brush in with fate when he accidentally diffuses a bomb. Lou's smooth moves catch the attention of an Anatolian Shepherd named Butch, who mistakes Lou for a trained agent and takes him into the fold.

From that point on, the movie centers around Lou's quest to become a top tier canine agent and an excellent pet for the Brody Family. Lou and Butch bond throughout the film, with Butch coming to respect Lou as a dedicated agent by the film's end. There's also a ton of hilarious interactions between the cats and the dogs. Most of the comedy in this film comes from the cats - who act like evil villains that are hell-bent on world domination. The film has been followed by two sequels, as of this writing.
