Tommy

Tommy was a loyal pooch. In fact, this amazing German Shepherd was so loyal to his owner, Maria Margherita Lochi, that after she passed away, he continued to go to the church she so dearly loved to look for her. At least that's what everyone thought Tommy was doing.

The Santa Maria Assunta Church in San Donaci, Italy would ring its church bells before every service, and as soon as Tommy heard the bells, he would head over to the church. The parishioners and the pastor of the church were used to seeing Tommy because he came to church with Maria every week and they did not mind him coming in to sit with them during every service.

Whether it was for Sunday Mass, a wedding, or even a funeral, Tommy would rush to the church as soon as he heard those bells ringing. It is hard to know whether the pooch was actually looking for Maria or if he just felt comfortable and at peace with those people his owner was so happy with every week.

The 7-year-old pooch was a stray when Maria got him years before, and he had been walking with her to church every Sunday since the day she found him abandoned in a field by her home. Maria was an animal lover who was known for taking in strays that needed homes. For the first several weeks, Tommy would sit outside the church while Maria was inside, but one day, he followed her inside.

Sitting at Maria’s feet quietly, the pooch was a perfect gentleman, so nobody complained, and Tommy continued joining them for service every week until Maria passed away in November of 2012. He continued to share the chapel with them every time the bells rang until he passed away a few months later.
