The U.S. Congress put out promotional materials in the style of the Doge meme which prompted Huffington Post to pronounce its demise. The meme became universally acknowledged, so much so that it even got into the field of finance! In December of 2013, a new cryptocurrency was introduced to the world, the infamous Dogecoin. This was the first cryptocurrency to be based on a meme, and it went viral when it got out. It started as a joke, but quickly became a real currency that reached a capitalization of US $60 million at the beginning of 2014.

But how does this adorable Internet phenomenon tie back to Venice and how are these two connected in any way? Well, it turns out that they share a name! The Doge of Venice was the chief magistrate of the Republic of Venice, elected by the aristocracy of the city-state. The first doge of Venice was Ursus who led the revolution against the Byzantine Empire back in 726. Usually, the doge was chosen from the members of some of the most powerful Venetian families, by the rest of the aristocrats, however, at one point it became a hereditary position. After 1172, the election of the doge was the responsibility of the committee of forty men chosen by the Great Council of Venice to make the elections fairer.
