Introduction
The third largest city in Bulgaria, Varna is a seaside resort on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. Located in the Gulf of Varna, the city has functioned as a major economic, social and cultural center for nearly three hundred years. The city has grown from a Thracian seaside settlement to a key seaport on the Black Sea and is referred to as the maritime capital of Bulgaria. Varna is home to the headquarters of the Bulgarian Navy and merchant marine.
A closer look at Varna will introduce you to its beaches, culture, history and more. The city may be where you encounter the perfect name for your canine companion.
Varna Dog Names in Pop Culture
Sunny Beach in Bulgaria is more than just a beach. The area is considered one of Europe’s party capitals. There is also a water park and amusement park and diving activities at the beach.
Sunny is also the name of one of the Obama family’s dogs. A Portuguese Water Dog, Sunny is the “little sister” of Former First Dog Bo Obama. Sunny got her name for her cheerful demeanor, and was introduced with a YouTube video and various cute photos. The pup was born in Michigan in June of 2012 and was described as “full of energy and very affectionate”. Prior to Sunny joining the family, Michelle Obama had expressed that Bo was lonely and had told reporters that she had hosted a “doggie play date” and that he “doesn’t have enough dog interaction”.
Another dog named Sunny received some media attention as a result of her volunteer work. The gentle Yellow Labrador Retriever is a therapy dog who visits rehab center residents several times each month. Sunny arrives with her friend (and owner) Vicki Slider and is ready to entertain and brighten the day of the residents. The sweet pup stops to greet each waiting person; having been doing this for eight years, Sunny has developed an instinct for what those she is visiting wants. She even happily accepts kisses from her friends. According to the center’s Director of Activities, Shane Patterson, “Vicki and Sunny’s visits promote an increase in our residents’ functional skills, social skills and coping skills. Their visits allow us to implement sensory re-education to each of our residents in a manner not recognized as clinical.”
Both Sunny and Vicki are very patient. Sunny will be sure to visit with each person that wants to spend time with her at least four times before she is ready to move to another part of the facility.
Sunny was two years old when she was trained to be a Therapy Dog, after a friend of Vicki’s from her church recommended it, noting that it would be a perfect mix for Vicki’s love of animals and older adults. Sunny was a natural. Sunny is now nearly 11 years old. Therapy dogs are encouraged to retire between the age of 10 and 12. While Sunny has slowed down a bit in recent months, according to Vicki, she is still enthusiastic when arriving to visit residents, which shows Vicki that the dog is not quite ready for retirement.
Varna Dog Name Considerations
Don’t fret if you are struggling to decide on just the right name for your pup. It is not unusual to find this to be a challenge; after all, you will be calling the name that you choose for years to come, it makes sense that you want to feel good about your choice.
One way to find possible names for your pup is to think of a place that you care about. It can be a place where you have lived, visited or hope to visit one day. Once you have a place in mind, you can take yourself on a virtual tour. Take Varna, for example. Bulgaria’s third largest city, Varna has plenty to explore, to include outdoor and cultural activities. While you take a closer look, you can note any possible names that you encounter. For example, take the name Vladislav (Vlad for short), in honor of a borough of Varna. Or choose Mia, short for Miadost, which is another borough of Varna.
With a name from the city of Varna, each time you call for your pup, you will receive a reminder of the city and all that it has to offer.
