What do a Tim Burton movie and a Japanese manga/anime have in common? No, it is not the original animation style, it is not the unique character design, not the compelling story. Those points are too obvious and easy to guess. What they have in common is the mutual appreciation of lovely little furry creatures that make our lives so much better because they are in them – dogs. One of those adorable doggos is Zero, the supporting character in the stop-motion film The Nightmare Before Christmas by Tim Burton. Zero is also the name of one of the main characters in Vampire Knight, Zero Kiryu, an ex-human vampire and a vampire hunter. Zero the anime character is the twin brother of Ichiru Kiryu, he is the father of Yuki’s daughter Ren, and he is considered to be one of the most handsome characters in the series.

Zero the doggo is an adorable little pup, a ghostly dog made of a white sheet, just like a stereotypical ghost, and he is the pet of the world-famous Jack Skellington. Zero reminds one of a basset hound as he has long, floppy ears, happy “eyes” (which are just two holes in the sheet), and the biggest smile on his thin face. His little nose is pointed upward, and it glows red, much like the nose of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, who was the inspiration behind Zero’s character design.

The first time he appeared and melted our hearts was back in 1993 in The Nightmare Before Christmas when Jack Skellington summoned him after the Halloween celebration. He comforted his owner and best friend and continued to follow him through the forest, where he wanted to play fetch with Jack. The pair comes across an area filled with doors which all lead to different holidays and are essentially their little world. Jack enters the door that celebrates Christmas, and upon his return, takes Zero with him through the Halloween inspired door, which turned out to have Christmas-like decorations and various items.

There, Jack decides to study Christmas and try to incorporate the decorations and customs into Halloween as well! He becomes a bit obsessed with this, which Zero notices and tries to influence his master, however, when Christmas comes, Jack tries to take the role of Santa and appoints Zero to be the sleigh leader, due to his cute red nose.
