Introduction
Tweety and Sylvester Inspired Dog Names in Pop Culture
Hector's relationship with Sylvester has morphed and changed over the years; he's been a constant guardian of Tweety in most iterations but he's gone from being mortal enemies with Sylvester in the early Looney Tunes and Merry Melodies shorts to being partners in The Sylvester & Tweety Mysteries show. Hector is often confused with another Looney Tunes Bulldog - Marc Anthony, the guardian of Pussyfoot. While both dogs are voiced over by Mel Blanc (again, like pretty much all Looney Tunes characters), Hector is grey like concrete, while Marc Anthony is brown like a cup of hot cocoa.
Speaking of Marc Anthony, we feel that the overprotective pooch deserves a shout out as well. Marc Anthony first officially debuted alongside Pussyfoot in the 1952 animated short, Feed the Kitty. This short marks the first time that the dog and the cat met one another and features all of the awkwardness that comes with all initial meetings. Marc Anthony starts the episode off with a sour disposition towards Pussyfoot, believing that his master is trying to replace him with the young kitten. He gradually realizes that the kitten is harmless and in need of someone to look after her. The episode ends with Marc Anthony overcoming his initial biases and effectively taking Pussyfoot under his wing.
We think it's rather interesting that Marc Anthony and Pussyfoot have a relationship that's entirely opposite of Hector and Sylvester; even recent entries into the Looney Tunes franchise depict Hector and Sylvester as not being very fond of one another at best. Marc Anthony and Pussyfoot, on the other hand, have become one of the most beloved duos in animated history - with characters like Buttons and Mindy from Animaniacs serving as direct homages to Marc Anthony and Pussyfoot.
Tweety and Sylvester Inspired Dog Name Considerations
It's also worth noting that Tweety and Sylvester have appeared in a vast amount of spin off shows and comic books based on the Looney Tunes franchise. One of their most popular spin off shows was The Sylvester & Tweety Mysteries. This series ran from 1995 to 2002 and featured Sylvester, Tweety, Granny, and Hector the Bulldog. With so many characters tied into this duo, you've got finding a dog name in the bag!
