Located in Central Asia, Turkmenistan is officially the Republic of Turkmenistan. The country is bordered by Kazakhstan to the northwest, Uzbekistan to the north and east, Afghanistan to the southeast, Iran to the south and southwest and the Caspian Sea to the west. Turkmenistan Dog Names In Pop Culture
In October of 2017, Russian President Vladimir Putin received a special birthday gift. A dog lover, Putin received a top breed puppy from Turkmenistan’s President. Turkmenistan’s leader, President Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, brought the pup with him to present to Putin. The pup is an Alabai, which is the Turkmen variety of the Central Asian Shepherd dog. The breed is listed as a part of Turkmenistan’s national heritage. The Central Asian Shepherd Dog is an ancient breed of large dogs that have been bred for herding, guarding and protecting flocks of sheep. Plush and cuddly when young, dogs of the breed grow in fierce shepherd dogs who are fearless when it comes to keeping wolves away and in encountering strangers.
The Alabai will have a strong, muscular build, with a head that is slightly rectangular in shape, a large nose, blunt muzzle, medium-sized eyes and hanging ears that are low-set and triangular in shape. The neck of the Alabai will be muscular and the pup will display a broad chest and straight legs. Males are typically larger and show more courage than females of the breed. Dogs of the breed are thought to have evolved over 4,000 years ago through natural selection in a vast area that extended from the Caspian Sea in the west to China in the east and from the Ural Mountains in the north to Afghanistan in the south. It is believed that the breed descended from ancient cattle dogs that are related to the Tibetan Mastiff and the Mongolian Shepherd. Early examples of these dogs protected cattle, dwellings and caravans of nomadic tribes. More recently, dogs were used as military dogs for the Soviet army. While these dogs are rarely seen outside of Central Asia, there has been some recent breeding taking place in the United States. The Alabai is known to be an affectionate family pet that is devoted to their people. They are typically patient with children, though supervision is necessary when they are around young and small children. Because of their size, the Alabai may accidentally knock one over.
When Putin was given the puppy, he took him and kissed him on his forehead. The puppy is named Verny, which means “faithful” in Russian.
