Tripoli Dog Names

The Arch of Marcs Aurelius is a popular attraction in Tripoli. Thought to be the last remnant of the city of Oea, the structure was actually built in 165! Marcus is also the name of a dog that has been a main attraction at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. The most popular and well-known staff member, Marcus is a yellow Labrador Retriever who is a part of Fairmont’s Canine Ambassadors program. The program allows “travelers missing their own furry friend or looking for a companion while taking a walk (to) bring along the resident Fairmont dog for extra security and the comfort of home."

Marcus has lived at the hotel for several years, a role he took on after he did not graduate from the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. According to the hotel spokesperson, Lori Cote, Marcus did not pass the final test. Apparently, Marcus was a bit too friendly, wanting to give kisses and play fetch, not traits that are ideal in a Seeing Eye dog. Fortunately, his role as “Director of Pet Relations” is a perfect fit. Marcus enjoys naps in the hotel’s lobby, where tourists can shower him with attention. Hotel guests can request to take Marcus on walks around the lake, as well as enjoy cuddles and doggy kisses during their stay.

Another dog named Marcus has gotten attention for being in the middle of a legal battle between his people and their high-end apartment building. His people insist that Marcus is a gentle companion while the building sees him as a “vicious beast." Marcus and his people, Steven Phillips and Diane Paolicelli Phillips, reside at 870 UN Plaza, where the board ordered Marcus to wear a muzzle after he nipped the finger of a fellow resident. The neighbor, however, explained that the incident was due to his behavior. At first, the Phillipses agreed and used the muzzle on Marcus. Eventually, however, according to court papers, they took it off, finding it “inhumane and unnecessary”.

A year later, Marcus barked at a neighbor; according to the board, the dog lunged at the neighbor and they ordered that the muzzle be put on him again or that his owners pay hundreds of dollars in fines. The situation further escalated when the board’s attorney threatened to report Marcus to city Health Department officials in an effort to have him euthanized. The Phillpses then received an eviction notice. This led to the Phillipses filing a lawsuit against the building and hiring a Ph.D. animal behavior consultant to examine Marcus and “testify to his good nature."
