Huan

Tolkien’s magical world is full of whimsical and mysterious creatures that, sadly, do not exist in our world. Elves, Dwarves, Orcs, Ents, Vargas, magical horses and giant eagles all make up the fairytale-like vibe of Middle Earth and the entire Arda, the Earth in the Tolkien universe with continents Middle Earth and Aman. Arda is the home of the Ainur, the Maia, the Valar, and – Huan, the Hound of Valinor.

While he was not cute and cuddly like dogs of today are, Huan was a mighty wolfhound of the First Age, which began when Valinor was completed and Morgoth overthrown. Celegorm the Fair, third son of Fëanor, a great hunter, got Huan as a gift from his friend Vala Oromë the Hunter. This was no ubiquitous gift. Huan was huge, as big as a small horse and as strong as the mightiest bear. He accompanied Celegorm on his hunting trips, but when Noldor rebelled, Huan followed his master to the Middle Earth.

The Valar granted Huan special powers that other wolves and dogs did not possess. He was allowed to speak three times before his death, and he could also not be killed unless the greatest wolf that ever existed killed him. Huan got involved in the famous Quest for the Silmaril. This happened when Celegorm intercepted Luthien, who sought to rescue her lover Beren. Huan loved Luthien’s scent, and captured her, bringing her to Celegorm. Celegorm wanted to marry her and form an alliance with her father, Thingol, and purposefully sent Beren to his death so he could do this.

However, Huan took pity on Luthien and decided to help her. He spoke for the first time in his life and told her about a secret exit through which she can escape and be free. He accompanied her to Tol-in-Gaurhoth and killed Sauron’s werewolves with the help of her magic. Once all werewolves were dead, Sauron himself emerged and transformed into the greatest wolf that had ever lived, because he knew about the prophecy. However, Huan managed to fight him off.

The second time he spoke, he told Beren and Luthien about his plan to get in Angband and brought them disguises, and the third time he spoke, he wished Beren and Luthien farewell after he was mortally wounded by the werewolf Carcharoth, whom he and Beren managed to kill once and for all.
