Treasure Planet is a Disney film that was released in the year 2002, during the infamous slump that the company went through after Walt Disney died. This planet is legendary for holding a giant horde of treasure and with a desire for a better life, Jim sets out to find it. With help from a rag-tag team of misfit space pirates and a family friend, Jim not only learns more about the treasure, but more about who he truly is and what life is all about. It is a great story and although it wasn't appreciated much at the time of it's release, Treasure Planet has slowly become a film loved by many.

Doctor Doppler

Even though Doctor Doppler is not a real animal, he is most certainly a dog. In the animated film, there are quite a few different races such as Feminid (cat people) and the dog-human hybrids such as the kindly doctor, for example. Delbert Doppler is the tritagonist in Treasure Planet and aids Jim as he heads off in search of the treasure. His skills are extremely useful as he has a doctorate in astronomical science. Although he can be a bit socially awkward, his knowledge of maps helps immensely towards reading the spherical map to Treasure Planet that Jim discovered.

Besides being incredibly smart, Delbert Doppler is also very kind and gentle, a quality that captures the attention of the rough and tumble Captain Amelia. Although at first the pair butt heads, it doesn't take long for a sense of appreciation towards the other's skills to come into play, and an eventual romance blooms. This takes a whole new spin on cats and dogs getting along, but we overlook it considering both are primarily human anyways. Obviously as it is not a vital part of the plot, what specific type of dog Delbert is based after never comes to light. Based on his appearance alone, he may be roughly designed with a Great Dane in mind due to his large ears (which tend to have lazy points), tall stature, and rather stately nose. However, appearance alone is where the resemblance seems to end as Doppler is rather clumsy, shy, and unconfident. The Great Dane is quite the opposite, however the two do share a very caring and loyal nature.

In the end, even despite all of his flaws and clumsy bumbles, Delbert Doppler helps Jim to accomplish his goal. Along the way, Doppler also becomes more sure of himself, allowing his inner strength to shine through, and ends up marrying Captain Amelia. While the idea may be a bit strange, the writers of Treasure Planet did do a very good job of using these animal's differing personalities to play into their character roles. Doppler is loyal and loving, with a high since of intelligence. Amelia, like a cat, is independent, stubborn, and fearless; but with a loving side as well. There is no doubt that the animal hybrid's personalities relied heavily on the animals that were part of them. So all of this to say, if you have a dog that is slightly goofy, yet extremely intelligent and brave, the names "Delbert", "Doppler", or even "Doctor Doppler" may be a great choice to consider!
