Transylvanian Hound Dog Names

Transylvanian Hound sounds exotic and menacing, however, when you meet this medium-sized black and tan hound you will be blown away by their unassuming appearance and sweet nature. There are not many Transylvanian Hounds being exhibited within the United States, however, Ardo, or Ardo Primus-Capio Carpathia CM RATN CGC, made headlines when he won Open Class Best in Show at the Golden Gate Kennel Club’s San Francisco’s dog show on January 30, 2016. This win was huge for not just Ardo but all Transylvanian Hounds as this was the first ever big win for a Transylvanian Hound at an American Kennel Club (AKC) sanctioned event. Ardo is owned by Karina Wahlman of Penn Valley, California and was bred by Istvan and Bri Mejores of Primus-Capio Carpathia Transylvanian Hound Kennels. The AKC recognized the Transylvanian Hound as a part of their Foundation Stock Service (FSS) Program in 2015 and was recently assigned to the Hound Group.

The Transylvanian Hound is a rare breed within the United States and Canada and is thought to be an ancient breed from Hungary. They are a scent hound that comes in two different coat types: smooth and rough. People commonly mistake the Transylvanian Hound for the Doberman Pinscher with floppy ears and a thicker muzzle. Originally, there were two sizes of the Transylvanian Hound, a long-legged variety and a short-legged variety. The long-legged hound was used to hunt big game and the short-legged variety was primarily used for small game such as hare or fox. The Transylvanian Hound has high stamina and can run over rough terrain easily. They are also good natured and loving toward their family. They are a loyal companion and once they have staked their claim on their family, they will become excellent guard dogs. In Hungary, the Transylvanian Hound is known as the Erdelyi Kopo and is believed to have been in existence during the Middle Ages. Historians believe the Transylvanian Hound was a favorite hunting dog of the Hungarian aristocracy. It was thought at the beginning of the 1900s that the Transylvanian Hound had become extinct but a small group was located by researchers in the woods of the Carpathian Mountains. In 1968, a group of breeders banded together to preserve the Transylvanian Hound, however, the long-legged variety is the only variety that has survived the test of time. There are a large number of Transylvanian Hounds in Hungary and Romania today and this breed is slowly spreading through Europe and North America.
