Introduction
Officially the Kingdom of Tonga, Tonga is a country and archipelago consisting of 169 islands, 36 of which are inhabited. Located in the southern Pacific Ocean, and spreading across about 500 miles, Tonga is surrounded by Fiji and Wallis and Futuna to the northwest, Samoa to the northeast, Niue to the east, Kermadec to the southwest and New Caledonia and Vanuatu to the farther west. Tonga is home to around 100,000 people, about 70% of whom reside on the main island of Tongatapu.
The unique island country of Tonga has a lot to offer, including a number of unique names, one of which may be just right for your pup.
Tonga Dog Names In Pop Culture
Bowie Tupou is a professional heavyweight boxer from Tonga. A talented athlete, Bowie tried a few sports before settling on boxing. He now lives and boxes in Australia. Bowie is also the name of our spotlight dog and is a pup who received a lot of media attention. A three-year-old Lurcher-cross, Bowie has unusual eyes; they are two different colors, just like those of the musician David Bowie, for whom the pup was named. While his unique eyes meant he was much talked about, staff at the Dog’s Trust, a rescue center, were concerned that his eyes were turning off potential owners.
When Duncan Jones, David Bowie’s son, heard about the pup, the dog’s story impacted him, leading to his launching an appeal on Twitter to find a home for Bowie. Fortunately, the publicity helped; Doctor Nia Bowen in Bridgend, South Wales saw the plea. Ms. Bowen had recently lost her dogs and was not looking to bring a new one home right away, however, when she saw the photo of the pup, she immediately fell for him. According to Ms. Bowen, “he is a brilliant, bouncy boy with a real zest for life and we’re so pleased to be able to give him a happy home”. The Rehoming Centre Manager at Dog's Trust Brigend, Angela Wetherall, stated upon Bowie finding a forever home, “we are so pleased that Bowie has found the forever home he deserves”. Other well-known canines named “Bowie” include the dogs of celebrities Jessica Alba and Lena Dunham.
A well-known athlete in Tonga is Pierre Hola, a Tongan rugby union player. A pup named Pierre received a lot of attention after being dropped off at an animal shelter in Fort Worth, Texas. A Poodle Mix, Pierre arrived with severe matting and dreadlocks. The dreadlocks were intertwined and caused pain when the dog walked and the matting limited his range of motion. Staff sprung into action to groom Pierre, which was done in sections over many hours. As his matted fur was shaved, he began to look like a different dog. He enjoyed a bath to remove the dirt and fleas on his skin. Once he was clean and comfortable, it was time to find him a forever home. Described as sweet and loving, the pup did not have to wait long. After a few days at the shelter, a family arrived and fell in love with him and with excitement, took Pierre to his new home.
