Introduction

The Time Bandits, released in 1981, is a family film created by Terry Gilliam and Michael Palin, best known for their roles in the comedy group Monty Python. In 2017, another Kevin, this time a nine-year-old Belgian Shepherd, faced a very uncertain future of his own after several years of faithful military service. He and his canine colleague, Dazz, were army dogs for the United Kingdom; they had put their lives on the line for their handlers in Afghanistan countless times by searching out IEDs and were credited with saving thousands of lives, in what should have earned them a cushy retirement. Instead, military chiefs in charge of their futures had declared them unfit for new homes, citing aggression issues, and all three had been slated for lethal injections despite offers from experienced handlers to house and care for them. The dog’s former handlers disagreed with the chief’s decision, and made an appeal to the Defence Animal Centre in Melton Mowbray, Leics and a former Special Air Sergeant by the name of Andy McNab, whose life had been saved when the dogs had detected an explosive when he was on patrol with them in Helmand Province, launched a petition that garnered more than 370,000 signatures to save the heroic animals.

Dog lover and Foreign Officer minister Sir Alan Duncan, outraged at the proposal, campaigned for the animals to be safely rehomed, writing letters to ministerial colleagues at the Ministry of Defence, and posting an entreaty on Twitter alongside several celebrities, including Kate Mara, Ricky Gervais, Pete Wicks, and Simon Cowell. Fortunately for the steadfast soldiers, the pleas of the military members connected with the dogs and of concerned citizens throughout the United Kingdom did not fall on deaf ears and Defense Secretary Gavin Williams took the time to visit with both Kevin and Dazz, as well as a former police dog by the name of Driver, where he officially granted all three of them with a reprieve.
