Introduction
The Sword in the Stone Dog Name Considerations
The closest thing to a dog in The Sword and the Stone is the wolf who plays a fleeting part in the movie. We looked further afield for magical dogs within the movie genre, and this is what we found. In the movie called My Magic Dog, the canine star is Lucky, who stars as the dog of a lad called Toby. After his mother's death, times are hard for Toby who wants to continue living with his stepfather, but his venal Aunt Violet has other ideas and goes into battle to obtain legal custody. As the movie plays out, Lucky, Toby's beloved dog is hit by a car while chasing a couple of burglars and he dies. This is a black moment in the movie and you can feel Toby's loss. As the battle over custody continues, Toby now has a protector - in the form of Lucky who magically returns as an invisible canine sworn to do his supernatural best to protect his young master. It's a lovely story about the power of love that unites a dog and his boy, even after death. While not quite in the same league as The Sword in the Stone, it is a story where magic and a dog combine to make a powerful duo to achieve the results desired.
In a similar vein, another dog who - funnily enough - is called Magic which is the name of the movie, is an angel sent to heal a broken family. The story is about how Magic creates an event that Sarah, who is a medical student, has an epiphany and as a result - Brad the father, and Kayla the daughter who have lost their wife/mother, get to meet Sarah. They are brought together by the search for Magic who escaped from the research lab where he was a subject. Using his magic powers, the dog manages to unite the three who find what they are all looking for which is love, and Magic achieves his heavenly goal. Dogs are natural actors who are totally believable as they have a magic of their own which always seems to show through. Although not the time honored tale that The Sword in the Stone is, the plot and the canine star make this movie one worth watching
