Introduction
Based on the second book of The Sword of Shannara Trilogy by Terry Brooks, The Elfstones of Shannara, the fantasy drama show The Shannara Chronicles takes place far into Earth’s future. It follows a heroic quest undertaken by Wil Ohmsford, half-elf, half human healer, Amberle Elessedil, an Elven Princess, and Eretria, a human woman who was raised by a band of thieves. At some point prior to the events of The Shannara Chronicles, powerful demons were trapped by faerie magic in a place known as the Forbidding, a limbo-like world that is both timeless and dark. The Forbidding is locked away from the world by the magic of the Ellcrys Tree, but the magic is failing and the trio of adventurers, led by an ancient druid named Allanon, are attempting to heal the tree with the use of Wil’s magical Elfstones.
The Shannara Chronicles Inspired Dog Names in Pop Culture
The mercenary Garet Jax is a skilled bounty hunter that is featured in both the trilogy and in The Shannara Chronicles. The books portray him as a deadly serious man who only fights to test his own skills; the television show gives him a more wise-cracking and roguish attitude. Both represent him as a man with little to no fear, who is typically on the wrong side of the law.
In Norman, Oklahoma, a very different Jax made headlines by helping law enforcement. The German Shepherd had been trained for military and police work but had been cut due to his fear of thunder and lightning. That didn’t stop the dog from protecting his family when a fleeing criminal tried to hide in their backyard shed. The fugitive, Dustin Lance Powell, had been leading police in a high-speed chase nearby when he decided to take refuge in the backyard of David Cunningham, Jax’s human companion. David had first run across the dog in a shelter, but he noticed a tattoo on the Shepherd's stomach when he rolled over, then looked up the number on a national registry, which put him in contact with the dog’s previous handler. When Jax began showing agitation and pacing by the back door one night in 2014, Mr. Cunningham knew something was very wrong. He let the dog out, and Jax made a beeline to the shed barking and howling, causing the hidden man to call out, “Don’t shoot, I surrender.” Once the police arrived on the scene, they arrested the man on several charges including possession of a stolen vehicle and endangering others.
While Jax was instrumental in the capture of the criminal, his fear of thunderstorms remained unabated so was still unsuited to work as a police dog. His desire to work was obvious, however, and Mr. Cunningham, the Director of Psychological Health for the 163rd Attack Wing of the California Air National Guard, helped him to find a way to continue helping others; he enrolled the dog in classes to have him certified as a therapy dog, and began bringing him in to see the airmen at the site. Jax became the first full-time therapy dog for the California Air National Guard and was requested by commanders of other units as well. Interactions with Jax boost the morale of the men at the base and help to encourage them to talk to Mr. Cunningham when they were under stress.
The Shannara Chronicles Inspired Dog Name Considerations
There are several different ways in which to choose a name for your new canine companion. Many people choose names that are specific to the dog’s purpose in life, like naming a Search and Rescue dog Tracker, or a duck hunting dog Archer or Artemis, while others may choose to select a name that is based on their own interests, leading to names like Bit or Techno for a person who enjoys computing, or Flora or Juniper for a botany enthusiast.
Another popular option is to select a name related to a book, movie, or television show that is meaningful to them. The Chronicles of Shannara is a popular television show based on an even more popular fantasy trilogy written by Terry Brooks and may provide great inspiration for your pup’s new moniker. There are many ways in which to narrow down a list like this one that is made up of names related to a television show. One option is to choose a name that fits with the dog's personality, selecting a name like Crispin, Diana or Flick for a dog that is fearless when protecting others, while another is to choose a name that is related to an area that is important to the story, such as Keel, Greymark, or Paranor.
