Harvey

Harvey is an old, world-weary Border Collie from The Runaways novel by Megan Rix. The story is set around World War One and tells the tale of Harvey's efforts to help a mother elephant named Tara find her baby. We won't venture into spoiler territory here, Rix's The Runaways is quite a powerful story - it's filled with heartache, drama, suspense, and hope. Moreover, Rix's book is a child-friendly tale - one that was intended to be read to young listeners who are in grade school. Rix tackles the War to End All Wars in a manner that's both mature and authentic but is also not traumatizing or overtly gruesome by any sense of the imagination.

Harvey is really the mouthpiece the Rix uses to muse about the devastation caused by WWI - the old dog has been around for far too long and is more hardened than Tara is. Nevertheless, his willingness to help her on her quest, and the subsequent bond he forms with Tara, represent Harvey's understated compassion and desire to do good. Megan Rix's The Runaways is a perfect reminder as to why people shouldn't judge books by their covers; while The Runaways may seem like a quaint children's tale on the surface, it is actually a fairly measured and thoughtful take on the casualties of war.

On the opposite end of the literature spectrum, we turn our attention to Marvel Comics' long-running series The Runaways. In particular, we turn our attention to a character that may not biologically be a canine but has the mind and heart of a dog. We're talking about Old Lace - a genetically engineered Deinonychus (a kind of dinosaur that looks like a really big Raptor). On the surface, Old Lace is about as far and removed from a traditional dog as one could get. But it's what's inside Old Lace that counts the most, literally.

Though Old Lace has the physiology of a reptile, she was genetically modified to more or less have thing mindset, compassion, and loyalty that's inherent in most dogs. This was a deliberate decision made by Old Lace's creators - two mad scientists by the name of Dale and Stacey Yorkes. The Yorkes initially had very nefarious plans in store for Old Lace; they intended to use the creature as weapon and servant of their cabal. Their daughter, Gertrude, intervened on Old Lace's behalf. Gertrude set Old Lace free and the two became Runaways together, alongside a slew of their peers.

The Runaways Inspired Dog Name Considerations

Due to the sheer number of projects that fall under "The Runaways" banner, there's probably a lot of you that are familiar with at least one of the musical acts, shows, or books that fall into that category. The most famous band that used "The Runaways" as their moniker made a slew of hit songs back during the 1970s; songs like "Cherry Bomb" and "Queens of Noise" made the girls icons and legends of Rock and Roll in their own right. If you're a fan of this particular band of Runaways, you could name your dog after a song or album of theirs to show your support.

There is also a myriad of books, plays and films that are linked to the phrase "The Runaways." Ex-United States soldier turned acclaimed writer Tom Clancy wrote the Net Force Explorers line of books. Runaways was the name of just one of his many entries into that series. There's also the 2010 biographical film that's largely based on the Rock band we discussed earlier. Then, there's the 1987 children's book The Runways; this story details the exploits of two young children who happen upon a large sum of money and run away to try and start life anew.
