Introduction

The Rescuers is best known as a Disney movie about two mice rescuing a little orphan girl named Penny. The movie, released in 1977, has two small but stalwart rodents named Miss Bianca and Bernard rescuing Penny from the clutches of the despicable Madame Medusa, a greedy and gaudy pawn shop owner who is holding Penny captive on an old abandoned riverboat with the help of her lackey, Mr. Snoops, and her two crocodiles, Nero and Brutus. The movie was loosely based on a book titled Miss Bianca written by Margery Sharp, the second in a series known as The Rescuers. Faith, the bipedal dog, exhibited these qualities to the fullest. Born in December of 2002 with one missing front limb and one small atrophied one, she was rejected by her mother and euthanasia was considered, but the Stringfellow family came to her rescue, nurturing her and teaching her to be as independent as possible. They did their best to encourage her to hop on her hind legs, but the canine did one better and began to walk on two legs, looking very much like a human. This behavior and Faith’s overwhelmingly positive and optimistic demeanor garnered international attention for both the dog and her owner, Jude Stringfellow. Faith was featured on shows like Montel Williams, the Oprah Winfrey show, and Ripley’s Believe-it-or-Not, but her greatest appearances were at kids’ reading programs and for the active duty and wounded warriors that she visited.
