Introduction
The OA is a mystery drama series that also has elements of science fiction, supernatural, and fantasy genres, and it debuted on Netflix in December 2016. Zal Batmanglij and Brit Marling created and executive produced the series, which is their third collaboration so far. All eight episodes of the first season were directed by Batmanglij, and Brit Marling plays the main character called Prairie Johnson. She is a young woman who comes back home after having been missing for seven years, cured of her blindness and referring to herself as The OA, which stands for Original Angel. Other notable characters are mad scientist Dr. Hap, Homer, Rachel, and other prisoners in Hap’s basement who all had Near Death Experiences.
The OA Inspired Dog Names in Pop Culture
There are so many movies out there that feature not only humans as their main stars, but also dogs, who sometimes just steal the show and become the most memorable part of the movie, series, or a play. One of those lucky dogs is Buck, an Alaskan Malamute that had a prominent role in the movie Eight Below, starring the late Paul Walker, Bruce Greenwood, Moon Bloodgood, and Jason Biggs. The story of the film is set in Antarctica, and it follows the story of guide Jerry Shepard at a research base. When a UCLA professor Dr. Davis McClaren arrives at the base, he requests Jerry to take him to Mount Melbourne so he can find a rare meteorite that fell from Mercury. And since the weather conditions do not allow the use of a vehicle, they decide that the only way to get there is by dog sled.
On the way back from Mount Melbourne, McClaren slips and breaks his leg, and falls into the freezing water. Jerry uses the lead dog, Maya, to get him out of the water and save his life. They have to go back to the base quickly since they were called back due to an approaching heavy storm, and the dogs are battling time and harsh conditions, pulling the sled and saving the men from hypothermia and frostbites. They do reach the base, and other researchers take the humans inside, leaving the dogs behind to freeze to death and die in the storm. Shepard tightens their collars to make sure they do not get separated, but the storm was so heavy, and the conditions are so severe that no rescue attempts can be made until next spring.
Shepherd, however, does not give up and he tries to find a plane to return and save his brave dogs, but no one wants to finance his expedition. After five months, the professor realizes that he needs to rescue the dogs that saved his life and agrees to finance the mission. The eight dogs wait in the freezing conditions for Shepherd’s return. Maya, Buck, Old Jack, Shorty, Truman, Shadow, Dewey, and Max go two weeks without food, getting more desperate by the minute in the freezing cold environment. At one moment, a gull flies nearby, which prompts them to break free, all except Old Jack, who is too old and weak to fight. They fight to survive, eating a dead Orca, travel together, and take care of themselves for six whole months. Finally, Buck, Shadow, Truman, Max, and Shorty find their way back to Shepard, they save dying Maya, and together all go back to civilization!
The OA Inspired Dog Name Considerations
The OA is one of the underdogs of Netflix, but the series that gathered quite a following on social media. People all over the world are discussing the mysterious events that happen and make up their own theories of what exactly could be going on. So, it is no surprise that the series has become a source of inspiration for many when it comes to naming their dogs, and you can be one of them. You can start with the name of the main character, who coincidentally has several names you can use. Prairie, Nina, or the OA, take your pick, any of those will suit your new pup fantastically, and you’ll get to tell the great backstory of the mysterious character.
Another great choice is the name of the mad scientist obsessed with near-death experiences, who is also the main villain of the show. Doctor Hap or Hunter Aloysius Percy has quite a crazy story but also an amazing name you can borrow for your new family member. Your dog will surely be the only one in the dog park with the name Aloysius if you go with that one. Finally, you can play it safe but cute and name them Homer, after one of the main characters, a charming guy indeed.
