Introduction
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is the first book in the five book
trilogy (yes, you read that right) written by Douglas Adams before his death in
2001, with the sixth addition to the trilogy penned by Eoin Colfer of Artemis
Fowl fame in 2008. The book and the series
center around the hapless Arthur Dent, a human of the digital watch wearing variety,
and his friend Ford Prefect. Up until the events in the story, Arthur had
believed his friend to be from Guildford, but Ford actually grew up on a small
planet near Betelgeuse and he rescues Arthur from Earth just as it is destroyed
to make way for a hyperspace bypass. The novel was first published in 1979 and
has spawned several short stories, audiobook translations, and stage, radio,
and television shows as well as a big screen adaption featuring Martin Freeman
as Arthur Dent and Mos Def as Ford Prefect. Fans of this great series of books will have fun considering a name for their pet.
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Dog Names in Pop Culture
Names that could have been inspired by Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy pop up frequently in popular culture, in books, on television, and in movies. There’s Mouse, for instance, the Tibetan temple dog in the Dresden File novels who is, like the mice in Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, much more than he seems, and television gives us Eddie, the irrepressible Parsons Russell Terrier owned by Martin Crane in the long-running sitcom, Frasier, played by Moose for the first seven seasons of the show, then by Moose’s son, Enzo, for the remaining four years. In the movies, we see Marvin, a sad-eyed bulldog, in the film “Paterson” by Jim Jarmusch, and Arthur, a Parsons Russell Terrier adopted by his late owner’s son in the 2010 romantic comedy-drama “The Beginners.” Marvin was played by the talented canine actor, Nellie, who was posthumously awarded the 2016 Palm Dog award at the Cannes Film Festival for her performance, and Arthur was played by the rescued canine actor Cosmo, who also appeared in the movie “Hotel for Dogs” in 2009. Cosmo proved to be so charming that he inspired his co-star, Ewan McGregor, to adopt a new puppy of his own after filming was complete.
In 2014, another canine Arthur was brought to the attention of the public, an ordinary dog who also decided to take an extraordinary journey. Arthur was a stray dog living in the jungles of Ecuador when a team of four extreme athletes from Sweden came to town to compete in the Adventure Racing World Championship, a competition that includes biking, hiking, and kayaking through the Amazon forest. Four days into the race, the captain of the team, Mikael Lindnord, shared some meatballs with the dirty and injured dog. It was enough. The dog, whom they eventually dubbed Arthur, decided he belonged with them. He followed them through the deep jungle, up steep trails, through collapsing mud holes, and across rivers, so impressing the team that they gave him another portion of their food when they all reached a stopping point. They decided to leave the dog behind on the last leg of the race, however, as it was deemed too dangerous to take a dog through the dark Mangrove swamps. Arthur disagreed, and as soon as they pulled away from shore, the dog jumped into the swamp and started swimming alongside the kayak. The team crossed the finish line of the competition in 12th place, but five members strong. They were eventually able to transport the dog from Ecuador to Sweden, where Arthur now lives with Mikael, Mikael’s wife Helena, and their young daughter Philippa.
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Dog Name Considerations
Choosing a name for your dog can be a big responsibility and while a poor name for your dog is unlikely to affect their self-esteem with other dogs, it can affect their bond with you as well as their training and performance. A good name is one that you and your family are comfortable saying and hearing multiple times a day and one that your dog responds easily to. Many of the names on this list, such as Arthur, Petunia, and Marvin, are familiar names and may not reveal their origins without a little explanation, whereas others, like Zaphod, Trillian, and Forty-two, are obvious references to the movie. If you are looking for a name that is a little bit more exotic, names like Lazlar, Magrathea, or Kria may fit the bill. Your dog’s personality is also likely to affect your choice of name; there are names for competitive or combative dogs on this list, like Vogon and Krikkit, or smart dogs, who might be more aptly dubbed Marvin, Trillian, or Hooloovoo. Even high-spirited party dogs have a place in the Hitchhiker’s universe with names like Ford or Dentrassi, and if you have a whole pack of party dogs you could name them after some of the ingredients of the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster with names like Janx, Hypermint, Fallia, and Olive. Then train… but... very carefully…
