The Fountain Inspired Dog Names

The church father, Donato Panna, did not make Tommy leave. He knew the pain of losing his dog around the same time, so he had an inkling of the pain the dog was feeling for losing his owner. Instead, he would let Tommy attend mass, then let him out with the rest of the church attendees. In 2014, Tommy died of illness himself.

The unwillingness or inability to accept loss is also prevalent in the main character(s) of The Fountain. In the third storyline of the movie, a doctor called Tom is battling with the reality of losing his wife, Izzi, to a brain tumor. He dedicates all his time to finding a cure before she dies.

Izzi also writes a story called The Fountain, focusing on Queen Isabella losing her kingdom, and Tomas Verde searching for the Tree of Life in Mayan territory. Izzi runs out of time to write the book, and Tom helps her to finish it. He then vows to find a cure for her disease and for death itself.

The film then switches between present day Tom, New Spain Tomas, and an alternative version of Tom who travels through space. All of the storylines are seemingly separate but get their connection through the underlying message of life’s path.

The movie is also about coming to terms with death, even when love drives it. Tommy the dog in pop culture and Tom from The Fountain both share this unique trait that’s both heartbreaking and educational at the same time.
