Introduction
The Count of Monte Cristo Dog Names in Pop Culture
Instead of swanning back home with large amounts of money, he carefully learns what happened while he was away and who betrayed him. He is then able to use his wealth, connections and a series of aliases to set matters straight without revealing his true identity. One of these aliases, Sinbad the Sailor, is used to save his old friend's business and conduct business in Italy. Dumas wanted each alias to represent a character trait or flaw in the Count. Sinbad, named after the mythological hero, is courageous and generous. He helped his friends and performed heroic acts.
Sinbad the Dog shared many of those qualities. We don't know where he was born, but sometime during 1937, he was found by the Chief Boatswain's Mate of the USCGC George W. Campbell, A.A. Rother. Rother wanted to give Sinbad to his girlfriend, but she couldn't keep him. So, Rother took him aboard the Campbell and offered him to the other sailors; no-one could take him but no-one wanted to get rid of him either. By this point, the dog had crept into everyone's hearts and had become a part of the crew. Since no-one could take him home, there was only one option. Sinbad would join the navy.
The sailors insisted that he should enlist, and justified their statement by proving that he had an active role on the ship and that he displayed qualities of a true sailor. They filled out his forms, and Sinbad left a pawprint on the papers to show his appreciation. Sinbad served faithfully for eleven years before being honorably discharged. During that time, he fought alongside the sailors during World War 2 and brought in quite a bit of media attention. To this day, a statue of Sinbad can be found on the Campbell's successor, the USCGC Campbell (WMEC-909).
The Count of Monte Cristo Dog Name Considerations
Most of both stories take place mostly in France, during Napoleon's fall and thereafter. The setting is as dramatic and dynamic as the book, so we thought we would incorporate some French names as well. These are names that might have been familiar to Dumas himself. All the names on this list will make you feel as though your dog were a part of the Count's world. Doesn't your dog deserve to be a part of one of the most epic tales ever told? Besides, some of these names are just too beautiful to pass up.
