The Blacklist Dog Names

Many people tune in every week to watch The Blacklist, but how many people will openly admit they named their dog after the leading character? It can end up being a bit of an awkward point for some people – depending on who they are telling, of course.

That’s why it’s always helpful to have a “back-up” name inspirer in the wings. That’s where Red and Red Dog come in. Even though they share the same name as Raymond “Red” Reddington, former United States Navy officer, they are famous in their own right.

Red appeared in the 2008 movie of the same name, about a man, Avery, who seeks revenge after someone kills his dog in an attempted robbery. Red was a gift from Avery’s late wife, so the dog meant more to him than anything else he owned. One day, when he was fishing with Red, three boys approach Avery and demanded money from him.

As punishment for only having $30 on him, they kill his dog. The movie focuses on Avery’s journey to get revenge, where he eventually kills two of the three brothers.

Red Dog, previously called Tally Ho, is an Australian Kelpie Cattle Dog cross that appears in a book and movie. The movie, from 2011, and the book, from 1993, focus on the real-life story of the dog that brings people together from throughout Western Australia.

Red Dog was born in 1971 and lived until 1979. For the majority of his life, he didn’t have just one owner; he had several. At one stage, a bus driver ended up taking ownership of Red Dog for two years. On the night that the bus driver, John, rides his motorcycle to propose to Nancy, the woman, he tells Red Dog to “stay” until he returns. However, John ends up in an accident on his way home and dies.

Because most people were shocked about John’s death, no one spared a thought about Red Dog. However, three days after the funeral, the town found him where John had told him to stay put. Red Dog then spends much of his days searching Dampier, Western Australia for John – never finding his old master. He then leaves Dampier and returns to Nancy where he has to try and find his place among Nancy and Red Cat.  

Red Dog eventually becomes sick, and the township finds him dead on John’s grave. It’s a heartbreaking end to the story, but the town of Dampier unveiled a Red Dog statue in his honor.
