Introduction
Officially called the United Republic of Tanzania, Tanzania is located in eastern Africa within the Great Lakes region. Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, is located in the northeastern part of the country. Tanzania is home to over 55 million people and over 100 different languages are spoken in the country, resulting in it being the most linguistically diverse country in East Africa. Landscape in the country is also diverse, with the northeast mountainous and densely forested, the northwest home to several lakes, and the Kalumbo waterfall in the southwest. With such diversity in many aspects of the country, it makes sense that Tanzania will offer a number of unique naming opportunities for your special friend.
Tanzania Dog Names in Pop Culture
In Tanzania, dogs are often viewed as “dirty”. Thus, it is not surprising that Ismael Mungaya’s father thought he was crazy for rescuing street dogs. The 21-year-old Ismael, who resides in Arusha in northern Tanzania, was yelled at for an entire week after he found Tina, a street dog who had just given birth to four puppies, under a bush. Mungaya wanted to help Tina and took her and her puppies home. He built a small box so that the dogs could be out of the rain and he fed them. Unfortunately, while he wanted to help, Mungaya was not sure what to do next. He was not aware of the existence of vaccinations and aimed to feed them and find homes for the dogs.
Mungaya turned to Facebook for help. He wrote a post about Tina and her offspring and expressed all that he wanted to do to help them. The post was shared and it led to people who were able and willing to assist. One friend brought dog food and called a vet who came to vaccinate the dogs. Another friend joined him and helped get the dogs spayed and neutered. After helping Tina and her puppies, Mungaya did not stop his rescue work. He began to rescue more and more dogs. While his father is not thrilled, he has begun to come around, even allowing his son to build a makeshift shelter on their land. Mungawa’s network continues to grow and as folks find out about his work, they are inspired to help. Mungaya has (so far) helped more than 30 dogs by rescuing them, rehabilitating them and finding them new homes. Currently, he has four dogs in his shelter that he is caring for.
Challenges do exist. For example, Tina ran away for a brief time and was shot in the leg and neck. Fortunately, a friend of Mungaya got her to the vet and she was able to survive. In addition to caring for the dogs, Mungaya also faces a battle trying to change the negative perceptions that people have of dogs. Of course, paying for the care of the dogs is a significant challenge. Mungaya receives small donations though he frequently has to pay for things with his own money. Mungaya is looking to raise money to weatherproof his shelter, so that the dogs will be protected from rain and not get sick.
