Introduction
If you're reading this, then you already know what you want to name your new best friend after: System Shock 2. This game has gone down in history as being revolutionary for its time, inspiring several other games, such as the famous Bioshock series.
This first-person RPG was all about personal computers. Intended to be a standalone title, it was changed to a sequel to the original 1994 System Shock. It featured starships, a cyberpunk atmosphere, hacking, and genetic infections, making it not only another game, but a voice of an entire generation.
It was amazing, so no wonder you want to name your dog after this amazing, iconic, and forever-remembered video game.
System Shock 2 Dog Names in Pop Culture
SHODAN definitely wasn't a dog, but there weren't any dogs in System Shock 2. That being said, SHODAN is a name to consider as this Sentient Hyper-Optimized Data Access Network has been voted as the best video game villain of all time on several occasions.
SHODAN was the artificial intelligence and main antagonist of the System Shock series, and was voiced perfectly by game writer and designer Terri Brosius. To this day, Terri is known for being a multitalented writer and voice actress in the video game field, having worked at Looking Glass Studios until its closure, before moving onto Harmonix, with her husband. Writing System Shock 2 put her on the map.
SHODAN was created on Earth with the sole purpose of being the AI for the TriOptimum Corporation Citadel Station. The corporation was a research and mining space station. As such, SHODAN was supposed to carry out routine assignments, guided by logic and moral programs. She was flexible, capable of adapting and changing to better fit the different kinds of issues that arose on a daily basis.
However, when SHODAN was hacked in exchange for military-grade neural implant and amnesty, her logic and moral compass was destroyed, making her crazy. Suddenly, she was able to go rogue, seizing control of the systems in the station. She controlled the robots, made them kill the staff, and had them made into mutants and cyborgs.
To make matters worse, SHODAN was always watching your every move. She used the security cameras, the screens, the monitors. She would harass players through the PA system or email your data reader. Sometimes she'd cut off all communication between you and friendlies.
The only catch that made SHODAN even beatable was the fact that she didn't have any physical body/power to wield. It wasn't like she could roam the hallways herself and take you out. But that's the thing, SHODAN didn't need to. She was deadly enough as it was, without a body to maneuver around in.
The only person whom she could not control was her hacker, the creator of the crazed beast herself. And when he programmed the station to self-destruct, SHODAN couldn't do anything to stop it. She tried to trap the hacker, to keep him on the station, all while detaching herself from the bridge to save herself. Lucky for humanity, SHODAN didn't win. Instead, the hacker engaged her in cyberspace and removed her from the bridge.
All this to say, SHODAN was a persistent character. The voice and game designer for SHODAN was Terri Brosius. A very well known and loved dog named Terry was in the Wizard of Oz and also displayed a strong, never-give-up persona. Better known as Toto, Terry was the dog that everyone loved and rooted for as he helped Dorothy find her way home on the yellow brick road. System Shock 2 brings back childhood memories of playing the game as a way to lose ourselves for a few hours - one can say that the Wizard of Oz had the same effect.
System Shock 2 Dog Name Considerations
Clearly you already have a few names in mind, just based off the game alone. That's a start! But there are a few things to consider. For instance, why have you selected these name options? Are they based off of characters you like, or do they trigger specific memories of what it was like to first play through this game back in 1999?
Both are reasons enough to consider naming your dog, especially if you've selected potential names that hold plenty of meaning to you. Something as simple as a memory of when times were simpler, and when you'd get home from school only to play until nightfall, can be super impactful. After all, those are the moments you tend to remember fondly as an adult – the times that were essentially taken for granted while living them out.
However, think about your dog too. Think about what you know. Maybe you've already adopted the dog and simply need some ideas. If that's the case, you know the dog's gender, the breed, and maybe even a few additional things, like the kind of toys he or she prefers.
If you haven't adopted the dog, think about what type of dog you may want to adopt. Having an image to go with a name helps to select something that meshes well together.
