Introduction

The Swedish Lapphund (or “Lappy”, a nickname) is one of the oldest breeds of dog. Lappies were originally and primarily used as herding dogs in their native Sweden.The breed originated in Lappland (now northern Sweden) and was bred by the Sami people, a nomadic tribe that ranged throughout Sweden, Finland and parts of northern Russia. When the Sami people began to transition from a nomadic existence to more permanent villages, Lappies were used as herding animals and guardians of the people’s reindeer herds. The Swedish Lapphund, interestingly enough, is believed to be descended originally from the Arctic Wolf, thousands of years ago. Today most of the world’s approximately 1200 Lappies live in Sweden, where they serve as excellent family companions as well as efficient hunting dogs. Loddi

Likely, the most well-known Swedish Lapphund was named was named Halli. He was the very first of his breed to be registered as a member of the Swedish Kennel Club; this took place in 1903.

Another Swedish Lapphund, Cahppes Barbmoloddi (Loddi), came home with her family as an early Christmas present on December 16, 2004. Her name may seem unusual to some - many contemporary breeders go with a customary practice naming their Lappies as a way of honoring the Sami people of Lappland, the original breeders. The name “Barbmoloddi” is the Samic word for “migrating bird”, which her owners felt appropriate since she had a long journey to reach them in California.

According to her owner, Loddi is quite a sturdy little pup. Her coat contains “bronzing”, meaning that her primarily black coat contains hints of brown. Now Loddi has apparently put on her “white lipstick” (a mark of age in dogs, with white fur appearing around the muzzle). This must look especially striking on a black dog.

Loddi, her owner says, is a loving, bright and independent girl. This general temperament seems quite particular to the breed. She is an energetic dog who enjoys activity time...another characteristic of the breed. Additionally, according to the owner, Loddi is also a very capable watch and guard dog.

Loddi has won several awards at dog shows. She was recognized as a champion by the American Rare Breed Association as well as by the the United Kennel Club. She has also won an International Championship with the International All Breed Canine Association.

In addition to shows, Loddi has also spent time learning herding and earned her Herding Capability Test. She also has experience as a member of a sled team for “urban sledding”, a sled dog experience on dry land as opposed to snow. Loddi has also begun training in “nosework”, this is training that, among others, K-9 police officers go through to identify and track specific smells.

Strahles Illu Anna (Anna) has the distinction of being the second Swedish Lapphund to arrive in California. She is owned by the same family as Loddi. Her name references two things: one, “illu” being the Samic word for “joy”, and Anna as homage to her breeder, Anna-Lisa Ahmark. Anna was too small a puppy to sit with her owners on the flight to California from her native Sweden and had to travel in the pet area, to her owner’s dismay.

Anna is a compact but graceful animal who enjoys a good session at the local dog park. Like her companion Loddi, Anna has also won several awards at show, including championships from the American Rare Breed Assocoation and the United Kennel Club.

There are a few considerations to think of when choosing your new friend’s perfect name. Swedish Lapphunds are known for being energetic and intelligent animals. These dogs are also known for their loyalty to family and their ease of training.

The Swedish Lapphund as a breed originated in ancient northern Scandinavia among the hunting tribe of people known as the Sami.
