Introduction
Many people often mistake the Swedish Cattle Dog with the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Both have short legs, large alert ears, long backs and a long tail. Both breeds were bred to herd livestock. However, the Swedish Cattle Dog hails from Sweden and is not as popular in the United States and Canada as the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Bringing home a new puppy is an exciting time for you, especially when you decide to add a Swedish Cattle Dog to your family. After locating a puppy for your family, you will then need to try to find a name that you like and feel will fit your new puppy.
Swedish Cattle Dog Names In Pop Culture
The Swedish Cattle Dog is a rare breed within the United States and it can be a little difficult to find a mention of this breed where they are being spotlighted. However, this compact herding dog has been able to excel in various dog sports including agility, herding trials and conformation. As people begin to see this little dog more and more often at the prestigious dog shows that are aired on television throughout the year, their likability and popularity are beginning to rise. There is a Swedish Cattle Dog living in West Milford, New Jersey with her owner, Diane Polito. Polito has been involved in dog showing since 1998 and has handled a number of different breeds. The Swedish Cattle Dog caught Polito’s attention and she purchased her first one to campaign in conformation dog shows. This first Swedish Cattle Dog was named Champion Jonricker Prince Oscar BN RN AXP MJP2 OA OF, Oscar for short, and was invited in 2015 to participate at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show hosted at Madison Square Garden in New York City during their annual show in February. Oscar was the number one owner handled Swedish Cattle Dog in the country in 2013.
At the Westminster Dog Show in 2015, Oscar was able to bring home a best of breed win but did not go any further in the show. Oscar was eventually retired from the show ring and Polito turned her focus to her newest Swedish Cattle Dog called Annie or more formally Champion Akutchi’s If You Could See Me Now At Kanouse, CGC RN ACT1 NAP NFT. Annie received her invitation to the 2018 Westminster Dog Show and Polito once again hoped for that coveted best in show win. Just like Oscar in 2015, Annie brought home the best of breed award. She worked tirelessly during the herding group judging, however, the judge thought that the Border Collie named GCH Majestic Elite clever Endeavor was the best of the herding group. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi named GCH Aubrey’s Tails Of Mystery was given second place, the Old English Sheepdog named GCH Bugaboo’s Let It Go Blu Mtn earned third place and the Shetland Sheepdog named GCH Laureate Invincible was fourth place. Even though Annie was overlooked during the group judging at Westminster, Polito is not disappointed with her performance that week. Annie has collected several other wins and titles throughout her career and Polito will continue to show Annie until she earns her grand championship. She will then officially retire from the conformation ring and focus on other performance titles.
Swedish Cattle Dog Name Considerations
The Swedish Cattle Dog is a loyal, smart, small dog that deserves a name that lets everyone know how special they are. The popularity of the Swedish Cattle Dog is growing and so is the trend of giving them a name that showcases their Swedish heritage. While some names with Swedish origins are a bit odd to hear, there are many more that have a similar sound to other names with a Swedish twist. Names such as Henrik, Johan, and Niklas closely resemble the versions you might be more familiar with: Henry, John, and Nicholas. Then there are cool sounding names that would make your dog the hippest on the block including Gunner, Soren, Maeve and Elin. When deciding on a name, choose names that are easy for all family members to pronounce. Then pay attention to other dog names in the neighborhood and scratch off any name that sounds too similar to avoid any confusion. Once you have made your cuts, have the other members of your family take a look at the list and pick their favorites. After a little time, you will come up with a name that is just right for your new Swedish Cattle Dog puppy.
