Introduction
Super Metroid, one of the many games that fueled the phenomenon known as Metroidvania, a blend of both Super Metroid and Castlevania. In it, game design and mechanics similar to those two series are utilized, often resulting in an action-packed, labyrinth and sidescrolling platforming. But just what made Super Metroid in particular so popular? Developed by Nintendo, this was the third game in the series, released in 1994. It was modeled after the developers' take on the Alien film series, and as such, featured aliens, space crafts, and seemingly unheard of at the time, a female protagonist with amazing armor. No wonder you want to name your dog after this game!
Super Metroid Dog Names in Pop Culture
Back in the 90's even commercials were awesome. Remember, these were the days when streaming services like Netflix hadn't even been thought of yet. Everyone had cable, and no one could skip commercials. In other words, TV advertising was still very much in power, and full of potential.
And companies knew that, especially Nintendo. The large gaming studio is known to have done some of its best marketing in the 90's, with tapes being sent to people's homes, Nintendo Power (magazine), and of course, the epic TV commercials. They tried everything with these commercials, from their edgy phase where they tried to appeal to the typical 90's skateboarding teenager, to the ones where they simply hired actors, like Paul Rudd.
But one of their most famous commercials, remembered fondly to this day, was a Super Metroid dog commercial. In it, a scientist explains that this Doberman named Killer will test out Super Metroid for himself, to ensure that the game is up to code. They want to be absolutely sure that the game is as intense as it needs to be. So, Killer, this ferocious and angry looking Doberman gets locked into the test chamber, left alone to play the game. Yes, a dog playing the game.
Only, you don't get to see that part. You get to see the scientist keep talking to the camera, as the door in to the test chamber begins to bend out of shape, steam coming from the room. You hear Killer barking up a storm in there, and you see the lights from the TV screen flashing. By the end of it, the door is a mangled mess, but the scientist manages to open it. And what does he find?
Well, Killer is no longer a killer, but more of a frightened Chihuahua with an oversized spiky collar that's dragging on the ground. His eyes even get animated in a way that makes him look extra scared, his body shaking and everything.
Not much is known about Killer in real life though. All that is really known is that he was a real Doberman, and he got the acting role of a lifetime, to be in a Nintendo commercial. What the dog's name was in real life, we may never know. But what we do know is that this was a favorite among children and teenagers of the time, and certainly a commercial done right.
Super Metroid Dog Name Considerations
When you're naming your dog, it's important to keep a few things in mind. Things like what breed will he or she be, what the gender will be, and how big the dog will eventually get. This is all information likely given to you by a breeder. If you're adopting, then you may not know any such details, since you'll just have to go to a shelter and select a dog that you love. It could be older, younger, a pure-bred or a mutt, you don't know until you get there.
What's important is that you write down what it is you do know about the dog. And if you know nothing, you may want to consider adopting a pet first, and finding a name later, once you spend a week getting to know the dog. Of course, another course to take is simply selecting information from Super Metroid, since that's your main name inspiration. Listing which names appeal to you the most, which characters you love, and what terminology resonates with you can help you in the brainstorming process.
Whatever you do, remember that the whole series is iconic, so don't limit yourself to just Super Metroid, the third game. There are plenty of names to choose from.
