Shiro

Shiro appears in both Suikoden 2 and Shikogaiden Vol. 1. This wolf-dog is white in color, with a coat and body much like a wolf. He grows up with a boy named Kinnison, a hunter who lives in the forest next to Ryube Village. Of course, getting a wolf-dog to trust you enough to be your loyal life companion is no easy feat. How Kinnison did it is anyone's guess.

Although all dogs derive from wolves, and still maintain strikingly similar DNA, there's nothing quite like a wolf-dog. They still maintain their feral ways, they still act like they're in the wild. They are less likely to focus on a chew toy, and much more inclined to eat the ground beef in your fridge.

In the game, you don't play as Kinnison, but you can also earn their trust enough to get them to join you on some adventures. To earn Shiro's trust in the game, you have to do something rather unexpected: show kindness to a bird who has fallen out of its next on the forest path. The player needs to place the bird back in its nest, then return after a few minutes to talk to Kinnison and Shiro. If you select the first option given, they join.

And you want them to join. Shiro on his own excels in strength, defense and speed. Although he can't equip any gear, he doesn't really need it. Otherwise, he'd be game-breaking. He already has enough advantages. For instance, he's one of the fastest characters in the game. He is similar in speed and agility to Riou, Nanami, and Kasumi, some of the better characters in the game.

It's during the Richmond Investigations that we find out that Shiro is 9 years-old, which in dog years, is quite up there. It makes sense too, growing up with Kinnison and all. Even still, he can not only keep up, he's capable of putting others to shame. It's also during one of these instances that we find out that Shiro is a "real carnivore." He loves meat, which means he'd probably go crazy if you tossed him a piece of jerky.

It's no wonder, seeing Kinnison and Shiro together, that so many players at the time dreamt of having their own wolf-dog. Certainly, it would be fantastic to have one, but you are mistaken if you think you ever quite own a wolf-dog.
