Introduction
Located on the east coast of Sweden, Stockholm is Sweden’s capital and also the most populated urban area among the Nordic countries, with 960,031 people living in the city and 2.3 million living in the metropolitan area. The city includes 14 islands and is the cultural, media, political and economic center of Sweden, with the region responsible for over a third of the country’s GDP. Waterways make up more than 30% of the city and parks and green spaces account for about 30% more of Stockholm’s space.
There is plenty to see and do in Stockholm, making it a great place to search for potential names for your new canine pal.
Stockholm Dog Names In Pop Culture
Lars Amble is a Swedish actor and director who was from Stockholm, Sweden. A well-known theatrical performer in his day, Lars later became the artistic director for the Maxim Theater in Stockholm. Lars is also the name of a K-9 officer at the Columbia County Sheriff’s office. The pup, a Belgian Malinois, joined the department at around 20 months of age as the first K-9 officer since 1999. Paired with handler Ryan Dews, a CCSO deputy, upon coming on board and completing a training program with Dews, Lars will help track suspects and protect officers and others during criminal situations.
CCSO Enforcement Lieutenant Dustin Hald, the overseer of the K-9 program, was a part of the selection process to find Lars. Hald explains that “we drove to California and tested dogs at two different police K-9 facilities between Sacramento and Los Angeles”. K-9 Officer John Eggers of the St. Helens Police Department, who has years of experience as a K-9 handler, accompanied Hald on the search. A total of 14 dogs were tested, with Lars, who arrived in the U.S. from Czechoslovakia, the top choice during the two-day testing process. According to Hald, “we looked for a well-rounded dog that was both social and inquisitive with a high play drive”.
Another dog named Lars received attention after being “rescued” by a dog that was being fostered by a family. The rescuer, name Fozzie, was a Mastiff and Pit mix who was large, rather unruly and very energetic. About three months after his foster family brought him home, the family heard him break out of their yard. His foster parent found him in a neighbor’s backyard, happily grinning at a skinny off-white pup who was smiling back at him. After getting Fozzie on his leash, the white dog followed Fozzie and his parent home. Skinny and dirty, the dog appeared to have been on the streets for some time. He did not have tags on him, nor did he have a chip. Fortunately, Fozzie’s foster family was willing to help him out. He was given a bath and the name Lars. While it was not clear what led to Lars being abandoned, he was scared and wary. Lars loved other dogs but was skittish around people and could not be trusted with kids or in crowds. Interest waned in the beautiful dog as folks realized the amount of work he would require. Fortunately, a home was found for Lars with a woman who already had three white dogs and a large fenced in yard where they can all romp together.
Stockholm Dog Name Considerations
If you feel at a loss as to what to name your new canine companion, take some time to figure out what is important to you in a name for your pup. You might be seeking something unique, a name that seems to fit your pet, or perhaps you are looking for a name with meaning to you. Indeed, it may be all of these things. Once you are confident in what you are looking for, you are ready to continue your search.
Particularly when a name with meaning is important to you, consider exploring a place that you have a connection to. For example, Stockholm, in Sweden, is a city with a myriad of things to offer. Take yourself on a virtual visit of the city and explore its neighborhoods, lakes, popular food and well-known people. Take note of any potential names that you encounter and bring them “home” to try on your dog. You can choose the one that is the best fit for your pup.
With a name from Stockholm, each time you call for your dog you will be reminded of the city and the many things that it has to offer.
