St. Petersburg Dog Names in Pop Culture
St. Petersburg is Russia’s second largest city and is home to many special people. A special dog by the name of Peter is our pop culture spotlight dog. Peter, a courageous and noble pup, gained attention in 1945 when he was awarded the Dickin Medal, which is considered the Victoria Cross for animals. Peter, a Collie dog who was born in 1941, served as a search and rescue dog in London during the latter part of the Second World War. The pup attended the 1946 Civil Defence Stand-Down parade and was presented to the King, Queen and Princess Elizabeth.
Peter was bought by Mrs. Audrey Stables for 25 shillings, and it was said that he had two talents; a talent for destructing his owner’s home and for ignoring all commands. He wound up being transferred into war service, where he served with Air Ministry dog-handler Archie Knight at the Civil Defence depot in Chelsea. There he was known as “Rescue Dog No. 2664/9288 Peter. The pup was active from 1945 until the end of the war, working as a search and rescue dog. One report written by Knight stated, “I think one of his finest jobs was on Monday. We were called 20 hours after the incident and after several hours of heavy rain. Three bodies were missing and he very quickly indicated in a most unlikely spot, but he was right, and they uncovered a man and a woman.”
After the war, Peter demonstrated mountain rescue techniques to other rescue dogs and handlers. He eventually returned home to Mrs. Stables and moved to a PDSA animal sanctuary prior to his death in 1952.
New Holland is the name of an up and coming neighborhood in St. Petersburg. Holland is also the name of a rescue dog who received media attention after receiving some help from the Trio Animal Foundation in Chicago. The pup needed urgent medical care after suffering through uninhabitable conditions at a shelter that only took in abandoned animals. Her fur was totally matted all over her body, in some places two to three inches thick. It took about two hours to groom Holland, with surgical grooming required. Fortunately, she had no other serious physical health issues, though she lacked emotional stability. After having her matted fur removed and having the chance to recover, Holland made a new friend in a therapy dog and before long had found her forever homeSt. Petersburg Dog Name Considerations
