Introduction

This indie platform game created by Derek Yu blew up to be this amazingly addicting video game with a massive following. Released in 2008 for PC, then remade for it in 2013, it’s also available to play on Xbox 360, PS3, PS Vita, and most recently PlayStation 4. What makes this game interesting is that although it's a big older, it holds up very well, and is still just as addictive as it once was. With both single-player and multiplayer modes in the remake, Spelunky managed to surprise the world. No wonder you want to name your dog after this game!

Damsel Dog

Spelunky is not your cutesy, goodie game. Although it looks innocent enough, and it certainly can be at times, it's filled with crude humor and some violence. It's a great game. For instance, consider the damsels. These are non-hostile characters, usually found in the caves, that call for help. Sometimes they operate kissing booths, which is pretty hilarious.

But see, their purpose is ridiculously horrible. They can provide the Spelunker with more health after being rescued, but they provide more benefits if you outright mistreat them. If you sacrifice a Damsel at an altar, you gain a lot of favor. If you use them as a throwing weapon, they can provide protection in the form of... well, you get the idea. They're a weapon! Or you can be mega terrible and use them as shields, you know, to get injured by traps and projectiles being thrown at you by hostile characters.

So, kill, torture, throw or save, your call. Either way, it's a win. But how does all of this relate to dogs? Well, there's a Damsel Dog. Yes, this Pug is in for one interesting journey with the possibility of death and chaos, but most certainly some kind of mistreatment.

The Damsel Dog is one of three main varieties, including the Male Damsel and the Female Damsel. There is also a Sloth Damsel, but it's more of an Easter Egg than anything, so it's secretly hidden away for creative players to find. Much like the Damsel Dog, the Sloth Damsel is small, adorable, with big eyes and usually found in a sitting position. Quite possibly a skin on the Damsel Dog, the Sloth will revert back to a Pug after you exit the game but can be brought back. There is a small chance though.

The Damsels are interesting all in all, as they kiss you upon exiting a tunnel, if you save them, that is. This kiss increases your health by one point, hence the kissing booths. But don't just assume these Damsels are up and ready to just kiss anyone for pocket change, no! Some of these kisses can be upwards of $14,000, like those Temple Kisses. They are $8,000 in The Mines, but they add another $2k to the price of every new area you visit.

Now that is an expensive health bonus. Still though, imagine the little Pug reaching up to give you one slobbering kiss worth $14,000 and it's pretty worth it!

Spelunky Dog Name Considerations

There are a few things to consider when naming your dog. You could take into account his or her size, appearance, likes and dislikes, favorite toys, favorite treats, or hobbies. You could also consider the dog's breed, color and gender. The whole point of a name is to reflect something, whether it's trivial or more insightful. But it doesn't always have to be this way. After all, if you're rescuing a dog from a shelter, you may not know the breed, let alone the age of the dog.
