Species Inspired Dog Names

If your family is not that keen on you naming their new family pet after a science fiction horror film, then never fear! You can have your cake and eat it too by connecting Species to dogs in pop culture, films, books, and cartoons. The name can relate to Species, but it can also be the name of another dog. No one will be any the wiser.

Preston and Jennie fit the bill nicely. Preston is the name of the mercenary and team member to help find Sil, while also being a cyber dog from Wallace and Gromit. Jennie is the name of a dog from Higglety Pigglety Pop. The connection of Jennie to Species is that both Higglety Pigglety Pop and Species share an actor in common: Forest Whitaker.

Jennie is a Sealyham Terrier who lives a comfortable life, owned by Maurice Sendak. She then embarks on a new adventure to get fresh experience and stardom. Jennie is a fictional dog but features in a movie and book.

Preston, on the other hand, is more like Preston from Species. He’s a fearless and robotic cyber dog and the main antagonist in Wallace and Gromit. He has a non-speaking role but is a complex character nonetheless.

Preston is Wendolene’s dog, left to her by her father, Mr. Ramsbottom. Preston forces Wendolene into an illegal sheep rustling business for wool to run her shop during a time of shortages. Preston then steals Wallace’s Wash-o-Matic blueprints to adapt for his own use. He turns it into a Mutton-o-Matic dog food machine and proceeds to make his own food.

Shaun swung Preston into the machine, reassembling him in the process so that he behaves like a normal dog once more. Originally, Preston’s owners built him to be a helpful and friendly dog but didn’t manage to achieve that.

He was a thug, a criminal, and a money-hungry dog that would sink to new depths to get results that suited him. Even though Mr. Ramsbottom left Preston to Wendolene, he feels no loyalty to her. He locked her up even though it meant she could have died going through the mincing machine.

Once Shaun pushes Preston into the Mutton-o-Matic, he’s an entirely different and harmless dog. He’s also more fitting as the faithful and loving pet that Mr. Ramsbottom had tried to achieve in the first place. Preston’s name also comes from Preston, Lancashire, and shares personality traits with Itchy and Scratch Land from the Simpsons.
