Introduction

Back in 1994, New Line Cinema released a film that was loosely (understatement of the year) based on of a relatively obscure comic strip called The Mask. Starring the comedic genius Jim Carrey and the beautiful Cameron Diaz in her big screen debut, The Mask was a critical and commercial smash - spawning an incredibly loyal fan base that was all too eager for a follow-up film. What they got instead was an animated series based on the film (that was actually quite a bit of fun to watch and lasted for 3 seasons) and the Son of the Mask in 2004 which has become infamous for being one of the most surreal, non-family friendly children's movies to have ever been made.

Son of the Mask Inspired Dog Name Considerations

Considering that Son of the Mask greatly underperformed at the box office and was decimated by critics and casual viewers alike back in '04, it's very likely anyone who says they like this film admires it in an ironic sense - viewing it as a guilty pleasure or a "so bad it's good" film. The film does have a few genuinely funny moments scattered about its 1 hour and 34 minute runtime, but the movie actually shines if you view Son of the Mask as a horror comedy film. We're not joking by the way; how else would you describe a reality warping dog dead set on infanticide, a delirious father also contemplating infanticide, and an angry Norse God who's initial character motivation is - you guessed it, bringing harm to a baby - as anything other than utterly horrific!?

Son of the Mask is one of those movies that's gained a vitriolic cult following since it was first released - many people have gone out of their way to watch the film in order to sate their curiosity, as opposed to watching it for the sake of genuine enjoyment. If you're the type of person who likes bizarre pieces of media and gets a kick out of dissecting films that didn't' do too well upon their initial release, then you may enjoy Son of the Mask (in an ironic sort of way) - possibly to the point of even naming your dog after a character from this benign franchise. Consider Alvey or Jorge for a male dog, or Tonya and Clare as tags for a female, If you are looking to be unique, choose Fringe or Edge, names based on locations in the movie. And of course, there is always Otis!
