The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, also known as a Wheatie or Wheaten, originated from Ireland as early as 1937. The graceful, yet strong terrier breed is an all-around dog. Their size (roughly 17-20 inches) and their weight (about 30-45 pounds) makes them able to perform as a general farm worker yet still be agile as a vermin exterminator. They are gentler, congenial, and more affectionate than other terrier breeds.

Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers are a popular family pet choice, so it’s no surprise that multi-platinum recording artist, Josh Groban, is one of those that have this breed. His Wheaten Terrier, Sweeney, is never far from his doting parent whether that’s simply on vacations, at home, or even on tour.
You might ask, why the name ‘Sweeney’? Josh Groban explained in an interview that Sweeney Todd had been one of his favorite shows. So, as a young theatre geek, he promised himself that his first dog would be named as an homage to his all-time favorite show.
One of Josh's favorite things about Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers was that they never really let go of their playful puppy-like attitude. Sweeney, now roughly ten years old, still acts like a kid.
Another famous Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is Pinot T. Wonderdog owned by Tony Aspler, a wine author. Pinot, who’s now 12, is a big fan of the park. She loves the cold weather and sociable events. According to Aspler, if there’s any sort of sociable function going on around her, she would want to be a part of it. Pinot, however, was not a very big fan of the Obedience School, where she flunked. She is also not a fan of being dressed up in any sort of costumes.
Sweeney and Pinot T. Wonderdog are not the only two Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers that have made the news. In January 2018, a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier named Rooney won the best breed title at the dog show in Tampa. With his handler, Shari Boyd, in tow, they’ll also be competing at the Lismore Once In A Lifetime Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Along with Rooney, there will be forty other Wheaten Terriers who are also competing. According to his other owner, Meg Ryan, Rooney still has his upbeat personality. He is a gregarious and happy dog, just like his owner.
In February 2016, a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier took center stage at the Westminster Kennel Club All Breed Dog Show. Kate Heller, a Rockaway Township resident, featured her dog, Champion Greentree Feis Dancer Midnight Tabasco Waltz, who goes by Dempsey. Dempsey was Heller’s first show dog, making a special place in her heart even after the numerous other Wheaten Terriers that she has had since. Dempsey has amassed a surplus of 15 points and 2 major wins with different judges. Heller has another Wheaten Terrier show dog named Sabrina who is 1 year old.
Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Name Considerations
Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers are self-confident, steady, and happy. They are alert enough to be considered as a decent watchdog but are too friendly too actually follow through with their warning barks. When they are raised with children and other animals, they get along great with both. Though, fair warning, they will chase after every little furry creature that they come across. They need names that will coordinate with their spunky personalities.
The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is also great at living in an apartment, but they cannot tolerate being alone for long periods of time. They are friendly towards children, other dogs, and even towards strangers, which speaks volumes about their demeanor. They do require quite a bit of grooming, but they are great family dogs.
This intelligent breed is considered fairly active with a thick, long, and silky coat. They are bred to be working dogs through generations of working on farms, hunting vermin and small game, guarding, and herding. Their names would have to match the hardworking lifestyles that they have kept through the two hundred years of their existence. With all that personality jammed into their squared and compact body – it’s only fitting to have a name that exudes that.
