Slovenia Dog Names

Slovenia was given a "paws up" of approval from Luna, who spent a summer in Slovenia with her person, Gigi. While there, Luna spent time in Ljubljana, Slovenia's capital, and walked around the lakes of Lake Bled and Bohinj. Luna also enjoyed going for hikes with Gigi in the Soca Valley. Gigi reported that Slovenia is possibly the most dog friendly country in Europe, pointing out that that is pretty impressive considering how friendly Europe is when it comes to canine pals. Luna was welcome in most shops, cafes and trains, and was even allowed to attend church!

In addition to being dog friendly, there is a lot going on for canines in Slovenia. For starters, fun-loving dogs with a competitive spirit may enjoy the Flying Dogs competition. Held in Kamnik, Slovenia, the competition is a three-day event. Each dog is put anywhere on a 10-meter platform. The dog then runs and jumps after a throw toy and into the water. Judges note the distance from the end of the platform where the dog first entered the water.

Also taking place in Slovenia is the training of dogs to detect hidden gluten in foods in order to help their owners with gluten allergies or sensitivity to avoid it. It takes several weeks and can be rather complicated because gluten comes in so many forms.

In Slovenia, you can participate in truffle hunting with a truffle hunter and their dog, who is specially trained to locate this treat, which grows underground. You can enjoy a walk through meadows and forests while the pup seeks out hidden truffles.

Slovenia is also home to a particular breed of dog. The Karst region of Slovenia is a rocky, windswept plateau that includes pine trees and hardy vegetation; the weather extremes of the area make it challenging to survive in. A breed of dog that is indigenous to the area is the Karst Shepherd, who is known for being robust. These medium to large mountain dogs are loyal and protective, with a dense coat covering their body. Dogs of the breed have worked tending sheep for centuries. Their exact origins are not known, though the breed has proven themselves to be excellent flock guards. The dogs would protect their flock at all costs, even against much larger wolves, becoming a key part of the lifestyle of those in the area. Only in 1968 was the Karst Shepherd recognized under its name and as its own breed by international breeding associations. The Karst Shepherd requires plenty of space to roam and is a good choice for people who spend a lot of time outdoors; you can expect a Karst Shepherd to be boisterous and energetic. It is important that they begin training at an early age so that they do not grow up to be aggressive. Regular grooming is important for this breed; they should be brushed three to four times per week.
