If you are going to name your dog after Sint Maarten, then you have to think of the implications of doing so. You will have to explain to people precisely where your dog’s name came from during social visits, or even check-ups at the vet. Peter was a search and rescue dog, but he is also the name of the Sint Maarten ex-Police Chief Peter de Witte. You can tell people you named your new addition after a search and rescue dog or an upstanding citizen that you admire in your home country. Peter, the rescue dog, was a collie born in 1941. A woman called Mrs. Audrey Stables of Weoley Castle in Gregory Avenue purchased him for 25 shillings. Mrs. Stables said Peter had two standout talents – destroying her home and ignoring her commands.

Because it was wartime, Peter went into war service with air ministry dog handler Archie Knight. Archie and Peter spent a lot of their time at the Civil Defence depot in Chelsea, and Peter had a new name of “Rescue Dog No. 2664/9288, Peter.” In Peter’s new role in search and rescue, he flourished. In one case, he was called in to find bodies almost one full day after a disaster – and with heavy rain. Very quickly he located three people in an unlikely spot away from the scene of the tragedy. In another case, Peter worked for ten hours straight without faltering, revealing many casualties along the way.

Peter would go on to save six people in a single attack, a grey parrot trapped in debris, and other people who were not so lucky to get out alive. He was so good at his job that he was the first port of call for several search and rescue teams – with not even the tiring work putting him off his game. In 1945, Peter received the Dickin Medal, which is the Victoria Cross of the animal world. He also attended the Civil Defence Stand-Down Parade the following year, meeting the King and Queen and receiving a kiss on the nose from Princess Elizabeth, now Queen Elizabeth II.

Even after retirement, Peter carried on helping by demonstrating rescue techniques to help others learn. Peter died at age 11 and was laid to rest at Ilford Animal Cemetery. Both Peter the dog and Peter the ex-Police Chief from Sint Maarten shared one common theme: their dedication and commitment to helping people.
