Introduction
Sinbad Inspired Dog Names in Pop Culture
There are many dogs throughout history that have been classified as heroes. Our spotlight dog today, Sinbad, is one of those heroes. The mixed-breed pup was one of the two animals that were qualified enough to be commissioned as officers by the United States military. This is a huge honor, and one that was rightfully earned by Sinbad, as it takes a great deal of hard work and determination for a dog to be provided with this title. In fact, Sinbad was so important in his role on the Campbell ( a ship in the United States Coast Guard) that he earned the title of K9C, also known as "Chief Dog" which is equivalent to a Chief Petty Officer. During his 11 years upon the Campbell, Sinbad was awarded service ribbons such as the American Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and Navy Occupation Service Medal, all of which were displayed proudly on his collar.
While the beginning of Sinbad's story is not one full of thrills, it is a befitting story for a sea dog. He was obtained in 1937 as a puppy by A.A. "Blackie" Rother of the United States Coast Guard. Sinbad was meant to be a gift for Rother's girlfriend, however, she was unable to take the puppy due to restrictions in her apartment. It was because of this that Sinbad ended up on the Campbell. At first, no crewman was willing to take in Sinbad, leaving him a stray with no owner amongst people on the ship. However, over time, he began to work his way into the sailor's hearts and most everyone wanted him to stay on board. Acting just like a sailor, Sinbad loved to drink coffee and whiskey, enjoyed hanging out in duty stations, and demonstrated what the sailors called "Seamanship". In order to actually become part of the crew, Sinbad had to sign enlistment papers like everyone else, and even used his pawprint to sign them!
Despite the fact that Sinbad may not have seen as much action as his namesake did in the film, there is no doubt that surviving World War II and being involved in some serious skirmishes as an essential crew member makes Sinbad a worthy spotlight dog. He retired in 1948 at the age of 11 with an honorable discharge and spent the last 3 years of his life happily onshore in New Jersey where he could still see the sea.
