Mining, particularly for diamonds, has been the country’s economic base. Sierra Leone is also one of the largest producers of titanium and bauxite as well as a major producer of gold.
As you embark on a search for the perfect moniker for your canine companion, take a look at Sierra Leone. The country offers unique name opportunities that will bring the country to mind each time you call for your pup.
Sierra Leone Dog Names In Pop Culture
Bo is the name of Sierra Leone’s third largest city. It is also the name of the former First Dog, Bo Obama. President Obama had promised his daughters a puppy during his presidential campaign (win or lose) and ultimately chose Bo, a Portuguese Water Dog. The pup was bred by Martha and Art Stern of Amigo Portuguese Water Dogs in Boyd, Texas. Bo is the son of “Watson” of the Rader family and “Penny” of the Stern household. Art Stern, the breeder, says that Bo is very smart, as well as easygoing and affectionate. Born in October of 2008, the pup moved in with the Obama’s in April of 2009. The pup has black fur with a white chest, white paws and a white goatee. According to the Washington Post, Malia and Sasha Obama had two reasons for choosing the name Bo for their dog. First, their cousins have a cat named Bo. Second, their maternal grandfather was nicknamed Diddley after Bo Diddley. Bo the dog is from the same Texas kennel where Senator Ted Kennedy got a few of their dogs.
Apparently, the Obama’s are not Bo’s first placement. Initially, he lived with another family and went by the name of Charlie. When things did not work out in that home, the pup was returned to the breeder per their contract and became available. It is thought that Senator Kennedy had some involvement in the placement and that Bo was a gift from him to the Obama’s. Before moving in with the Obama’s, Bo spent time with a foster parent learning obedience commands with Kennedy’s trainer, Dawn Sylvia-Stasiewicz in Hume, Virginia. Bo is the first dog the Obama’s have had; they chose the breed because it should not impact Malia’s allergies. Portuguese Water Dogs have a fleecy coat and don’t shed much, thus they are considered a hypoallergenic breed.
The Obama’s had initially talked about rescuing a dog from a shelter, however it is rare to find a Portuguese Water Dog at a shelter and finding a hypoallergenic breed was necessary. Bo has nine littermates, one of which was adopted by Senator Kennedy and named Cappy. In August of 2013, the Obama’s adopted a pal for Bo, a female Portuguese Water Dog named Sunny.
Sierra Leone Dog Name Considerations
Wondering how to go about choosing a name for your canine pal? For some, the perfect name quickly comes to mind, while many others struggle to find a name that feels “just right”. If you are struggling, rest assured that you are not alone and that there are ways to go about coming up with name ideas, one of which may be the moniker you have been looking for.
One way to discover unique name possibilities is to take a closer look at a place that interests you. It may be a place where you have lived or hope to one day visit. Take Sierra Leone; located in West Africa, the country has plenty to offer as far as a diverse landscape and diverse population. A virtual tour of the country will bring a variety of ideas to your attention. Consider Binkolo as a name for a peppy pup, referring to a rural town in the area. Does your dog love vegetables? If so, Fufu, a vegetable dish originating in Ghana would provide the perfect tag.
With a name from Sierra Leone, each time you call for your canine pal you will be reminded of the country. In addition to the regular reminders of a special place, you will have found a unique name for your pooch that may be a perfect fit!
