Shutter Island Inspired Dog Names

In the movie Shutter Island, the main protagonist is a U.S. Marshal named Teddy Daniels, who is actually a patient at Ashecliffe named Andrew Laeddis. This was the main plot twist of the film, where it is revealed that “Teddy” is a false identity conjured by Laeddis because he refuses to accept his role in the death of his wife.

The name “Teddy” is also often used for pet names, specifically for dogs. In fact, one of the earliest and most renowned canine actors in history is a Great Dane named “Teddy”. Also popularly called “Keystone Teddy” (because of his roles in movies from Mack Sennett’s Keystone Film Co.), he is credited with starring in at least 60 movies between the years 1915 and 1924.

Arguably the first ever canine superstar in the American film industry, the fawn brindle pooch that stood around 42 inches tall and weighed over 140 pounds. In the early years of film, producers understood that audiences responded positively to dogs in movies because they added warmth and humor. Moreover, canines often performed some tricks and feats that were a joy to watch. This was the reason why several dog actors rose to prominence, one of which was Teddy.

When he began his career in 1913, the gentle giant appeared as an extra in a Keystone Film Co. short entitled A Little Hero. Mack Sennett, the founder of Keystone, saw potential in Teddy and knew that he can become a superstar, which led to the canine’s first regular role project, the 1916 short Nick of Time Baby. This was one of the first instances where a dog received a contract. Sennett was highly impressed with Teddy and stated that he behaved as professionally as all the other actors he worked with.

This was the start of an illustrious career for Teddy and he immediately captured the hearts of the audience. He was athletic, smart and talented; he was even often referred to as the “dog with a human brain”. During this period, Teddy was one, if not the most famous dog in the United States. Because of this popularity, Teddy was given a lead role in the 1917 Keystone comedy short entitled Teddy at the Throttle. In this melodrama spoof, a young Gloria Swanson was tied to a train track by the villain. Using her dog whistle, she calls Teddy for help.

After the success of the short, Teddy had several other lead roles (usually as a hero) in a number of films and he kept rising to stardom. His fame also helped in the recognition of the Great Dane Breed. Additionally, the name “Teddy” became one of the top dog names in America in 1920. In 1923, however, his age caught up with him and eventually retired from acting. Teddy lived out the rest of his life until 1925, when he passed away at his owner’s ranch at the age of 14.
