Introduction
Shadow of the Colossus is a classic, with its own remake and everything. Who would have thought that a game filled with stone bosses would blow up with such fandom? Well, it did back in 2006, and then again with a 2011 PlayStation 3 remaster, and finally in 2018 with a remake. But fans still can't get enough! The remakes are spaced out enough that it doesn't feel like an overdose. Plus, almost 80% of the initial Japanese shipment was sold within two days. The scores for the game have always been at least 8/10. No wonder you want to name your dog after the game!
Shadow of the Colossus Dog Names in Pop Culture
Although Cenobia is never quite described as a dog, the Colossus looks like, sounds like, and acts like a dog. It's not too big, especially compared to the other Colossus, but it is ferocious and certainly not one to be taken lightly. Again, Wander has to defeat each one in order to bring Mono back to life.
Cenobia is the fourteenth Colossus, found in the ruins of the large city of the Forbidden Lands. It is fully armored, and there's nothing to really... poke through, so to speak. However, the first part of the fight is supposed to consist of Wander finding high ground anyway. Cenobia is very hostile, and will attempt to dislodge, break or otherwise destroy whatever Wander has climbed up on to get away.
To defeat Cenobia, Wander needs to shoot at it, lure it away to gain some valuable climbing time, and make it run into things, like the central pillar that holds the roof up. These major run-ins with obstacles are crucial, because stone blocks will fall on the beast, breaking its armor and sigil (located on its back, major sigils are weak points that must be damaged in order to take down the Colossus). Only then will Wander have enough weak spots displayed for him to stab, but also time in which the beast is stunned, to really make a huge impact.
But enough about the fight, what about Cenobia as a beast, as a Colossus? Cenobia has always been called a dog by players, due to her appearance, sounds and mannerisms, but it wasn't until the Shadow of the Colossus official artbook and guidebook came out that it was outright described as a type of Cerberus.
Again, Cerberus has been a huge influence in games. It's been featured in Devil May Cry, Castlevania, Shadow of the Colossus, and more. However, this is unlike any Cerberus we've ever seen. Cerberus stems from Greek mythology and is a three-headed dog that guards the entrance to the Underworld. Essentially, Hades' pet and guard dog. He lets the dead in, but no one else, and he certainly doesn't let anyone out – dead or alive.
The three heads each move differently, so one can watch the left side, another the right, and the third guarding the center. With three viewpoints, nothing really gets past the beast. And when it comes to attacking, well, it's been known to have up to three different attack styles, each head wielding a different element (ice, fire, water).
What does this have to do with Cenobia? We may never know, but it has been stated Cerberus was a great influence.
Shadow of the Colossus Dog Name Considerations
Minimalist landscape designs, immersive gameplay, and an emotional journey collide together in Shadow of the Colossus. The critical acclaim by both the media and video game critics has put this game on the map, calling it an iconic game and important turning point in game art style.
And the funny part is, the story isn't that detailed. There are basically no backstories for any of the characters. But it does provide a fantasy setting called the Forbidden Land. In it, Wander, the protagonist of the game, has to resurrect a girl named Mono. To do this, he needs to defeat the Colossus, all of them. And each one has a different appearance and fighting style.
The only companion Wander has in all of this is his beloved horse Agro. Oh, and the occasional help from Dormin, a disembodied entity that speaks with one male voice and one female voice at the same time.
So, if you're trying to name your dog after all of this, there are a few ways to go about it. Choose your favorite characters, your favorite Colossus, or words that you think are associated with the game. Maybe feelings or memories that come to mind when thinking about the game?
