Introduction
Secret War Inspired Dog Names In Pop Culture
The Allies first found Smoky sometime during February 1944. Smoky was hiding out in a foxhole in New Guinea all by herself. When the Allied troops initially encountered her, many soldiers assumed that she was a Japanese dog as they hadn't ever seen a Yorkshire Terrier before. This theory fell through after the troops attempted to feed Smoky a series of commands in Japanese. The Yorkie simply exchanged puzzled looks with the Allies and stayed put. The soldiers then tried to command Smoky in English. Her inaction proved that she didn't understand that language either. Mystified by the dog, the Allies took Smoky into their care for a while. It wasn't until Corporal Wynne encountered Smoky that she'd find a new home.
After meeting Smoky at a Prisoner of War camp, Corporal Wynne purchased the Yorkie for two Australian Pounds. Smoky and Wynne then traveled together for years. In Wynne's own words, Smoky "Served in the South Pacific with the 5th Air Force, 26th Photo Recon Squadron." Throughout their time together, Smoky and Wynne formed a tight bond with one another. Thanks to their friendship, Wynne was able to teach Smoky a slew of tricks in a bid to help raise morale.
Smoky gained fame and notoriety for her ability to perform complex and intricate tricks. Wynne spent hours training the Yorkie and helping her master new maneuvers. The two would then put on shows for their fellow soldiers to help keep spirits high. Smoky also used her petite size and agility to help engineers build an airbase at the Lingayen Gulf in Luzon. This particular base would eventually help the Allies prevail during their Pacific Theater campaign. Steve Rogers - the original Captain America - fought during World War II. How cool would it be for Smoky and Corporal Wynne to make an appearance in a Captain America comic one of these days?
