Akiko

Akiko Nakagawa is a voice actress who was born in Sapporo and is known for roles like that of Sota Higurashi in InuYasha and Ann in Little Snow Fairy Sugar. Akiko is also the name of a dog who got some media attention after being rescued from a puppy mill in Tawain. The pup, a Chihuahua, apparently barked more than her owner at the puppy mill was okay with. Her vocal cords were cut and when she was no longer able to reproduce and deliver puppies for the owner to sell, she was taken to a high kill shelter. There, she was given a steel name tag with the number 143.

Johanna Quinn, who works with Heart of Taiwan Animal Care, arranged to have a group of dogs on death row brought to Canada through Eleven Eleven Animal Rescue. Number 143 was among them. Upon being rescued, she was given a real name: Akiko, which means “sparkle, bright”. In Canada, Kimberley Ann Barley was on a list to foster shelter dogs. When she heard about the Chihuahua from Taiwan who needed a ride from the airport and a temporary home, she happily agreed. Akiko was very tired and upon arriving at Barley’s home, slept for days, only getting up to use the bathroom. Barley remembers that Akiko was skin and bones and missing a lot of fur. She was heartworm positive and had to have several teeth that were rotting removed.

Barley explained that they bonded right away and that Akiko was not afraid of her. Very quickly the pup began to live up to her name. It seemed that Akiko knew she was home. It took a bit longer for Barley to realize this herself. She had recently changed careers and was not sure that her schedule would allow for a dog and so Barley took Akiko to an event to meet potential adopters. Each time someone completed adoption papers, Barley would get emotional. At day’s end, Barley made the decision to adopt Akiko. Akiko now goes by Kiko and is a bright light in the life of Barley.

According to Barley, remembering that steel tag with the number 143 on it factored into her decision.
