Introduction
Saga Inspired Dog Names In Pop Culture
Sweet Boy is a character that has a complex relationship with Marko and Alana - the two main protagonists of the series and the parents of Hazel, Saga's narrator. Sweet Boy is technically an antagonist in the series, but only because his masters compel him to act aggressively towards our heroes. True to his name, Sweet Boy is a typically well behaved and mild-mannered dog that only wants to serve and protect his human companions. For the most part, Sweet Boy just stares off blankly and quietly waits around until it's time for action.
It might be a little difficult to tell based solely on the picture above but Sweet Boy is a type of genetically modified Saint Bernard. His perfectly spherical round eyes and reddish fur somewhat hint at his benign background, but it is Sweet Boy's special abilities that set him apart from your average everyday dog. Sweet Boy possesses incredible tracking and smelling capabilities, surpassing the likes of Bloodhounds and Poodles, and is extra tough and intelligent. Sweet Boy's most amazing ability, however, is his power to shoot needles out of his nose that can tranquilize their targets on contact. This ability is heavily relied upon by Sweet Boy's masters - The Brand and The Will - to apprehend bounties and runaways - like Marko, Alana, and Hazel.
Serving on the side of the wicked and the corrupt ultimately led Sweet Boy to an early grave; however, when travelling with his sociopathic master The Will, Sweet Boy was inadvertently shot and killed by an unknown assailant. The bullet wasn't even intended for Sweet Boy - it was The Will who was supposed to have been taken out by the hit man. To make matters worse, Sweet Boy wasn't even The Will's Dog. He belonged to his sister, The Brand.
There is another dog besides Sweet Boy that also is dear to the Saga fanbase: Mr. Vaughan's very own Dachshund, Hamburger K. Vaughan! Hamburger has been cited as being Brian K. Vaughan's personal aide when it's time for the writer to select letters for Saga's letter column. Hamburger is well known and loved by Saga fans around the globe, who offer the dog love and praise all across various online message boards that can be found on sites such as Reddit, Facebook, and 4Chan. Hamburger is such an integral part to Saga's success that the Dachshund was even featured in the same Time Magazine article that was dedicated to Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples!
Saga Inspired Dog Name Considerations
Brian K. Vaughan doesn't pull any punches when he creates stories for his characters but he doesn't create dark tales simply for darkness' sake either. At its core, Saga is a comic book that meditates on parenthood, fate vs. free will, classicism, racism, love, loyalty, and the everyday struggles people face throughout life. This series is definitely worth a read for anyone looking for a weighty, thoughtful type of story, or a dog name!
