Introduction
RoboCop may forever be considered by some as “just another 80s movie” by some, but for others, it’s a killer cyberpunk-style science fiction story that was well-written enough to blossom into the franchise it soon became shortly after the original film was released back in 1987. Of course, its numerous award nominations speak to its technical ability as well. Outside of some great quotes that have instilled themselves in pop culture, the entire RoboCop universe, which spans four films and miniseries, features a ton of great characters from classics to late introductions, all of which are complete with equally great names fans can use as inspiration to give their dogs.
RoboCop Inspired Dog Names in Pop Culture
Although RoboCop eventually spanned decades, it certainly has an association with its origin in the 1980s. Although it wasn’t the first time science fiction touched on cybernetics, it ended up being one of the most popular, as it quickly moved from the status of influenced to influencer, closely following in the footsteps of recent predecessor The Terminator, which has enjoyed similar fanfare, much of which bled over into the RoboCop franchise as well.
Along with the duo came a popular line of action figures and other themed toys, which were not only met with open arms at the time, but has now gone shifted into the realm of being highly collectible, a single original action figure fetching nearly $100 a pop via online resellers. But they weren’t the only robo-centric toy line that got a taste of cult status.
In the late 90s, another toy line was manufactured by the genius toy minds at Sega Toys and eventually released by one of the most popular producers of the time, Tiger Electronics, the ones who were behind the Furby and the Giga Pet: the Poo-Chi.
Despite being released nearly a year after Sony’s AIBO hit the market, Poo-Chi, an interactive robotic pet dog, offered a much friendlier price point, and some could argue, a cuter, more kid-friendly design. Coming on the heels of dropping Furby and Star Wars-branded toy sales, The Poo-Chi ended up being a massive success for Hasbro’s Tiger Electronics, selling 10 million units over the course of its first eight months on the market.
Although the prime sales of the original toy only lasted for about two years before Hasbro and Tiger shifted gears, they did not stray from the model that had been set with the groundbreaking toy. Instead of pivoting altogether, the company expanded their line, pairing with industry giants like Disney to release special editions to coincide with films like 102 Dalmatians as well as a Christmas themed version that would bark classic holiday tunes.
They soon expanded the line even further by designing other animals, changing the classic Poo-Chi into their line of FurReal Friends, including everything from guinea pigs to dinosaurs. In the process, they also produced additional spin-offs that reached as far as a robotic flower (called Petal-Chi) and baby (Baby-Chi) to the ultimate classic robot named Botster. The Poo-Chi eventually went on to being one of the most iconic toys of the era, also making it one of the most popular dog-based toys in the last few decades.
RoboCop Inspired Dog Name Considerations
Coming up with a good RoboCop-inspired dog name can be as simple as giving them the title of a favorite character, but if you’d like to add a bit more depth, consider compiling a list of their most defining traits, from their looks to their quirks and personality. Once you’ve completed it, you can compare it to our list and see where the best comparisons stand out.
For instance, if your dog tends to be a bit mechanical in how they approach daily activities, then Robo would be an easy choice. If they’re particularly loyal and stay by your side no matter what, then maybe the name Lewis would be more appropriate. If they always happen to be making trouble, especially if they have influence over others (like canine cohorts), then the names Clarence and Boddicker would both certainly be suitable.
There are plenty of directions you can go with the process, as you can pair them up with a character (and name) that shares a similar haircut, general look, attitude and so on. Don’t be afraid to get creative. If you need any inspiration, pick one of your favorites out of the series or have a movie marathon with your dog and see what jumps off the screen.
