Although the comics were named after Archie and the series likes to focus on the All-American football player, the truth is that he is often outshone by his best friend and partner-in-crime, Jughead Jones. Jughead is a fan favorite and continues to make the story interesting. This might have to do with the fact that Archie is near perfect, which makes it hard to relate to him. Not everyone can sympathize with the boy. On the other hand, Jughead is delightfully flawed, which makes him much more relatable than his best friend. While they are both beloved, most people admit that their favorite Archie character is in fact, Jughead.

In the comics, Jughead is a lovable oaf. He has sworn off women and wants to be a life-long bachelor. He is consistently lazy and loves food more than anything in the world. If he can get out of work, he will do so by any means necessary. Although he isn't the best example out there for kids, he is still wonderfully entertaining. In the show, Jughead is a little more damaged. He belongs to a gang, wants to be a writer and seems to revel in the darker side of his friends and town.

Instead of being a lifelong bachelor, he is attached to Betty Cooper, everyone's favorite girl next door. The two make an adorable couple, and she helps him through his darkest moments. As we mentioned, Jughead is flawed. His father is in jail, his mother left him and he spends the majority of the first season homeless. Instead of being a lovable oaf, he is like a lovable Holden Caulfield. Together, they try to unravel the mysteries of their small town while he tries to deal with being in a gang.

One thing that Jughead has in common with his comic book self, is that he has a dog named Hot Dog. In the comics, Hot Dog is Jughead in dog form. They have the same goals and ideals. They both want to eat constantly, sleep and just be left alone to eat and sleep. In the series, Hot Dog belongs to the Southside Serpents. When Jughead finally agrees to be initiated in the gang, he is met by Hot Dog, who seems to take an immediate liking to him. Although the Old English Sheepdog has a small part, it was enough to make viewers fall in love with him.

Riverdale Dog Name Considerations

The Archie Comics first appeared in the early 1940's. Morale was low and people were not very cheerful. It was the second world war, of course. While the fighting raged on in Europe, America was being sucked in and everyone, even those who weren't in the crosshairs of war, was starting to feel the effects. People were gloomy, and they wanted something to cheer them up. Entertainment became a little more cheery and although it was interspersed with propaganda, it did a good job of cheering up the public. One of those mediums was comics. Archie comics were cheerful and proudly American, so naturally, they soared in popularity.

This immediate rise continued for years when other comics suffered, Archie and the gang adapted. Now they have adapted to the small screen, and the results are phenomenal. Teenagers, like in the 1940's, can't stop talking about what Archie and co were up to in the last episode. The premise is darker, edgier and it works. Everything on the surface looks sugary sweet, but that illusion is shattered in episode one. This has resulted in tremendous popularity.
