Rio de Janeiro Dog Names

A resident of Rio de Janeiro, Wilson Coutinho Martins is committed to helping all animals. The man is known in his community for his efforts at rescuing and rehabilitating animals that are in need and has developed an online presence. One dog, ultimately named Davi, turned out to be a particularly special rescue for Wilson.

In 2012, Wilson had gotten a tip about a stray dog who was living in the woods near his home. Wilson went looking and found a homemade tent with and empty food bowl and a dog living inside it. He was shocked by the condition of the dog; while strays are not uncommon in Rio de Janeiro, this dog appeared to have been purposely left behind. And based on his appearance the dog needed urgent help.

While Wilson was not sure how long the dog had been there, he was severely malnourished, leading him to believe that he had been there for a long time. Weighing only 28 pounds, the dog’s ribs and hip bones were protruding under his thinned fur. He had an open wound on his backside that started at the base of his tail and had grown to wear nearly all of his hind end was infected and raw. The sore was so bad that his bones were exposed in some places.

Wilson realized that the dog needed immediate assistance; the pooch was likely anemic and had gotten an infection from numerous tick bites. Wilson spend some time with Davi in order to earn his trust, and then tried to have the dog walk with him home. As a result of his painful sore, the dog was unable to move on his own, leading to Wilson carrying him to his home to begin his rehabilitation. Once they arrived home, Wilson bandaged the dog’s wound and then took him to the vet. There, Davi got a blood transfusion as well as IV antibiotics.

It was not clear if Davi would recover, however, Wilson provided care around the clock and the lesion started to heal. As that improved, the dog was able to start gaining weight. Shortly over a month after bringing Davi home, Wilson posted an update on Facebook stating “Our Davi is well and gets better every day”. With better health came a better mood and Davi began to show his personality. After some months, the dog’s wounds were healed. By that time, Wilson had grown very attached to Davi and realized he needed to adopt the pup himself. Davi gained media attention as his recovery was documented on Facebook, where there were thousands of comments and reactions.
