Introduction
The Pyrenean Shepherd is a unique herding dog that only recently has enjoyed full registration status with the American Kennel Club. They are somewhat scruffy looking, but are extremely athletic and loyal companions. When you make the decision to add a Pyrenean Shepherd to your family it is a big responsibility. Another responsibility that comes with a new puppy is finding the right name to suit their heritage and their personality. The Pyrenean Shepherd originated in France and Spain, therefore, a name steeped in French or Spanish tradition might be a good place to start when searching for a name for your new pup.
Pyrenean Shepherd Dog Names in Pop Culture
The Pyrenean Shepherd is a rare breed that is beginning to gain popularity within the United States partly because of their ability to finally receive full registration status with the American Kennel Club in 2009. Millions of people tune in every year to watch the prestigious Westminster Dog Show at Madison Square Garden in New York City. During this dog show people are introduced to all the dog breeds that are currently recognized by the AKC. In 2010 the Pyrenean Shepherd made its Westminster debut as a member of the herding group. This was the first time millions of people actually saw a Pyrenean Shepherd and learned a few little tidbits about the breed from the announcers. Since their debut at the 2010 Westminster Dog Shows, the Pyrenean Shepherd has become a solid competitor in the herding group with millions of people cheering them on each year.
In 2018 the number one Pyrenean Shepherd, Grand Champion Eclipse De La Petite Ferme De Wihr, or called Clipper for short, represented his breed in the herding group. Viewers learned that Clipper was the imported son of one the top winning Pyrenean Shepherds in the world. Clipper was bred by Patrick Reeb of France and is owned by Dr. Patricia Princehouse of La Brise Pyreneans located in Chardon, Ohio. In 2017 Clipper won Best of Breed at the Westminster Dog Show but did not move any further in the competition. Clipper worked his way back to the Westminster Dog Show in 2018 in hopes of this being his year to bring home the prize. Clipper once again won Best of Breed and moved on to group competition. However, history repeated itself and Clipper did not advance any further past the herding group.
The amazing thing about Clipper is not the fact that he is a Grand Champion or he has won two Best of Breeds at consecutive at the prestigious Westminster Dog Show. The amazing thing is that Clipper accomplished this at ten years of age. Clipper has the distinct honor of being the top winning Pyrenean Shepherd in the breed history; he has even surpassed the number of wins that his sire earned during his illustrious career. Most competition dogs, especially conformation show dogs peak by age five or six and then are retired from the show ring. Clipper seems to keep going and gets better with age. At ten years old his exercise regimen includes running for five to six miles each day. He is also given a strict diet with specialized supplements to keep his coat and health in top condition. Clipper has yet to retire from the show ring, but his owner is considering taking the next show season a bit slower.
Pyrenean Shepherd Dog Name Considerations
The Pyrenean Shepherd originates from France and Spain and it is debated that some of the best quality Pyrenean Shepherds come from France. That is of course from the famous French import, Clipper, the top winning Pyrenean Shepherd in breed history. Many breed enthusiasts will search for names that have a French or Spanish twist to them such as Bastien, Rio, Bleu or Juliet. Others may decide to get to know their new Pyrenean Shepherd better before deciding on a name. The pup’s personality will many times help his owners find just the right name. When choosing a name, involve the entire family in the decision. This helps all the family members to bond with the new pup and feel like a part of the decision making process. Find names that are easy for everyone in the family to say, some names may seem like a mouthful for younger family members. Also choose names that are unique to other dogs in the neighborhood to avoid any confusion when walking your Pyrenean Shepherd through the neighborhood or visiting local dog parks. Most important when naming your new puppy is to have fun, this should not be a stressful time but one of happiness and expectation.
