Pyrenean Mountain Dog Names

The Pyrenean Mountain Dog breed is also known as the Great Pyrenees.  They are a large breed and typically have a white or cream-colored coat.  Originally, these canines were used as working and herding dogs, but they have also been used as therapy and rescue dogs.  They are very loyal and devoted to their family, however, they have occasionally been known to be stubborn, so it can’t be stressed enough just how important it is to train and socialize this breed correctly and from a very early stage. 

In popular culture, a Pyrenean Mountain Dog appears as Belle in the movie Belle and Sebastian, based on a French novel by Cecile Aubrey, Belle et Sebastien.  Set during World War II, a little orphan boy and his secret pet Pyrenean Belle, try to help French Resistance fighters avoid a Nazi capture.

The spotlight name for this name guide is Marco.  The Pyrenean Mountain Dog makes an excellent show dog, and the show dog, Marco, is a beautiful Pyrenean who has won many different awards and categories in several shows and competitions.  The name Marco is a significant name.  It's of Italian origin, but it actually means warlike.  Marco certainly works har;, in fact, he is a trooper that takes the competitions and shows by storm!

In 2017, Marco (registration name, CH Brynjulf Wahoo Creek Don't You Feel It) won the National Specialty, awarded by the Great Pyrenees Club of America. Marco, bred by Pyrenean Mountain Dog breeders Brynjulf of Williamstown, Jersey, is also the 2018 Westminster Kennel Club Best of Breed winner.

In the UK, Pyrenean Mountain Dog breeders, Kalkasi, have many beautiful Pyreneans, including Kwincey.  He has won several categories in shows and competitions and this includes Best Veteran in Show at North East Pyrenean Mountain Dog Club of Great Britain in 2017.  He also won 1^st Veteran at the famous British dog show, Crufts, and was voted Veteran of the Year at South East PMDC. 

The American Kennel Club recognizes the Pyrenean Mountain Dog as the Great Pyrenees breed,  and have done so since 1933.  They rank this breed as the 67^th most popular breed in America and state that this breed is calm, smart and patient.  They also suggest that although this large breed isn’t a particularly active dog, these little polar bears require plenty of exercise because of their size.  Keep them busy in mind and body, and ensure they are properly trained and socialized, because this breed is known not to necessarily have a set type of personality as they can be stubborn and have occasionally been known to become aggressive and difficult to handle.
