Introduction

The British science fiction drama Primeval, developed by the creators of the Walking with... documentary series Adrian Hodges and Tim Haines, first aired in February 2007. Abby Maitland, one of the few characters in the British television show Primeval to play a major role in all five seasons, is tough, loyal, and well-loved by many Primeval fans. While she tends to be headstrong and impulsive, she also has a special place in her heart for animals, particularly reptiles, and is both protective and kind towards them.

Abby Tisdale, a Goldendoodle in Michigan, is also protective, kind, and loyal, especially to her favorite little girl, Mighty Maya Tisdale. Maya was born four months premature, weighing in at only a pound and ten ounces, and it was during her eighty-seven days in the NICU that she was given the nickname Mighty Maya for her fighting spirit. Maya’s mother, Amy, was concerned for her, both physically and socially, but then they got Abby. Abby, who was born without a paw on her right front foot, immediately bonded with Maya and became not only her playmate and loyal companion, but also her therapy dog. Abby would follow the little girl around like a shadow, encouraging her to move by playing with her and providing physical support when she tried to stand, helping her to strengthen the muscles in her lower body.

In May of 2018, Maya underwent a surgical procedure known as Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy, a procedure that could give her the ability to live with more mobility and less pain by reducing her muscular spasticity. Her parents were told that Maya would require grueling daily physical therapy and it may be months or even years before she could walk unaided, but Maya had different plans. With the faithful Abby by her side, Maya worked hard at strengthening her legs, and within just seven weeks her parents were able to post a video of Maya taking her first unaided steps in their living room, declaring “I’m walking! I’m walking! Yes! I even took a big step,” while her proud pooch Abby looked on. Maya still has a great deal of physical therapy to go in order to become fully mobile, but with hard work, dedication, and Abby by her side she’s gaining more independence each day.
